* Augmentatism – using AI to become more yourself

https://augmentatism.com

“I first came across Augmentatism while looking into what I would call “protopian” approaches to AI – approaches that use AI to enhance creativity, agency, and human flourishing rather than flatten them. It is not naive optimism about technology. It embraces the potential for empowerment while acknowledging the pitfalls we also have to cross if AI is going to strengthen human life rather than standardise it.

The Augmentatism manifesto (linked at the end) describes a movement of “AI Artisans” building their own personally shaped AIs. That framing sits naturally next to the values we are building Mycelium Hub and Spore Society around. It also gave a name to something I had been circling for months without quite pinning it down.

The idea is simple, but demanding: AI should deepen what makes us uniquely human.

It should help you see more clearly, express more precisely, remember more faithfully, coordinate more intelligently, and connect more meaningfully. But that does not happen automatically. It depends on how you structure the relationship with the tool.

This is where Augmentatism becomes useful to me: it treats AI as a practice rather than a prompt. A practice has loops in it – creation, review, feedback, improvement – and those loops are where the uniqueness gets baked in. You do not ask for output once. You build context. You review. You correct. You teach the system what you mean by good. You sharpen your own discernment in the process.

A concrete example is the kind of community-sensing agent I can imagine for Spore Society: something that periodically reads across the site and tells me what the community is actually engaging with.”
