notes/quotes:

8 min – sam: that title.. that’s the challenge.. we must not be afraid to be free.. and then the question .. how do we operationalize that to the fullest possibility

need: means to undo our hierarchical listening so that we can org around legit needs

11 min – ronald: if you believe in freedom.. you must believe in risks.. and risks are something we’re averse to taking.. willing to defend not only heroes but villains.. at some point we all draw lines.. we put the brake on and say enough

14 min – sam: democracy is the least efficient/orderly way to go about organizing society

16 min – sam: (hugo) black starts to waiver.. he’s seeing the open society.. the free expression rights.. may be leading to the undoing of the republic.. (1968).. the beginning of the end of our demo story of lib.. reminds us .. it’s hard to fully embrace what it means to be free.. ie: we are for free speech but..

pearson unconditional law et al

21 min – sam: let’s go back to 1919 – left wing manifesto – didn’t work – but didn’t matter – laws said can’t do anything to criticize the govt.. but not for states.. but.. we were afraid to be free

25 min – sam: one thing we have in 14th amendment .. right to due process

oi.. that’s not freedom.. rights.. any form of democratic admin.. any form of m\a\p.. not legit freedom.. this law ness et al.. is a distraction/cancer/irrelevant s to legit freedom

note.. last umpteen yrs spent experimenting/researching conditions needed for all of us to be legit free..

findings:

1\ undisturbed ecosystem (common\ing) can happen

2\ if we create a way to ground the chaos of 8b legit free people

27 min – sam: also in 1919 mail bombs.. after sweeping up many anarchists across country.. benjamin gitlow et al

31 min – on history of free speech.. where do threats come from

36 min – sam: 1st amendment gives us all the right to say what we must say..my causes.. to what extent are we creating schools/environs for young people to find what they must say rather than what they can say

what we need more.. is a means to listen better.. to self/others/nature.. no words.. idiosyncratic jargon.. self-talk as data.. non hierarchical listening .. et al

51 min – ron – freedom is an experiment.. and sometimes it fails.. and until it does we have to take risk

sam: and freedom depends on civil friction.. only way it can survive is if we build in ourselves skill set and capacity to be comfortable w the discomfort of competing ideas.. and the confidence/clarity to know what it is that we must say in that marketplace of ideas.. and how it is we should go about expressing those ideas.. those are the skills of free people

? we have no idea what legit freedom is.. ie: black science of people/whales law et al..

i don’t think .. if we were all legit free.. we’d care about expressing ideas in a market place of ideas.. or have any relevance to competing ideas ness..

i think our days would be more about curiosity over decision making over explaining, over naming the colour et al..

ie:

imagine if we just focused on listening to the itch-in-8b-souls.. first thing.. everyday.. and used that data to augment our interconnectedness.. we might just get to a more antifragile, healthy, thriving world.. the ecosystem we keep longing for..

what the world needs most is the energy of 8b alive people

52 min – sam: (lessons from book) starting pt that all humans w rights.. go to the greatest extents possible to protect all those rights.. and that ain’t enough.. only way from industrial to info to democratic age.. we’ve still got a long ways to go.. we have not figured this out.. we need to stop thinking of democracy et al as something we can understand and export.. we are in the infant stage of what it means to be free.. and we should not be afraid of that.. still have long way to go.. but goals we set over 200 yrs ago are still right.. nothing wrong w what we are aspiring to

oh my.. so many red flags
