miles and nika on visual assemblies
Miles and Nika discuss organizing a Visual Assembly in New York on July 25th [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUUJ76AGZnA]:
Visual Assembly is a project of collective decision-making, having fun and drawing together right on the streets. Think of dancing, signing or food sharing – the basic human thing to do. When people draw something together — for example, a playground or migrant center, or think about how affordable cooperative housing will be organized in their city, or anything else — they naturally negotiate with each other and create something much greater than a public art activity. They create social fabric that has been destroyed in our atomized society. https://museum.care/events/self-organ…

notes/quotes from 7 min video:
miles: when will we get to nuts/bolts.. ‘this is what this building will be.. et al’.. t
city sketchup ness et al
nika: for me valuable to talk about high level.. something everybody can relate.. quite ambitious project.. only work if lots of people doing it all over.. on reg basis.. we can relate to each other only if we can find very similar or very opposite desires.. t
this is what we experimented with 13 yrs ago.. and it’s great.. but we found that the whac-a-mole-ing ness is a killer (why below you are both talking about getting people to join and keeping them there.. et al).. so it’s why/how we came up with the need for a means (problem deep enough; mechanism simple enough; system open enough) for everyone to do it from the get go
ie: findings from on the ground ness:
1\ undisturbed ecosystem (common\ing) can happen
2\ if we create a way to facil the seeming chaos of 8b legit free people
more specifically:
means to get to the root of problem
legit freedom will only happen if it’s all of us.. and in order to be all of us.. has to be sans any form of measuring, accounting, people telling other people what to do
how we gather in a space is huge.. need to try spaces of permission where people have nothing to prove to facil curiosity over decision making.. because the finite set of choices of decision making is unmooring us.. keeping us from us..
ie: imagine if we listen to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & use that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness)
the thing we’ve not yet tried/seen: the unconditional part of left to own devices ness
[‘in an undisturbed ecosystem ..the individual left to its own devices.. serves the whole’ –dana meadows]
there’s a legit use of tech (nonjudgmental exponential labeling) to facil the seeming chaos of a global detox leap/dance.. to facil the thing we’ve not yet tried: the unconditional part of left-to-own-devices ness.. for (blank)’s sake..
ie: whatever for a year.. a legit sabbatical ish transition
miles: disagreements never an issue.. people are like.. i’ll do mine over here and you do yours over there..
all the so-many-things that become irrelevant s
miles: people more conservative in ny.. tight schedules.. not enough time to do it.. so definitely more work to do there in how we get them involved.. if there is more structure.. they’re likely to come.. or get some well respected agency involved.. gives it that air of legitimacy.. gives it the right framing (for them)..t
why we need a sabbatical ish transition.. again.. otherwise we just perpetuate whac-a-mole-ing ness
nika: maybe we should now invite people in other places other than ny.. people are writing me wanting to use the napkin.. it looks complicated.. so maybe if we could simplify that.. maybe zoom on a model form..
problem with inviting vs listening to itch in 8b (or 1000 or however many we can model this with) souls.. this is why i’ve tuned in when you considered madagascar and st vincent.. et al.. we need a space to model this.. could also very well be anywhere..
miles: i think it is so much less work than i expected.. start putting something down as a center.. ie: draw big building or pond.. and then people very quickly start drawing things.. i think a bit part is having people with chalk in hand just handing it out with no explanation.. just draw.. if someone wants to do this.. a 5 min convo can convey it al.. more personal than instructions
takes a lot of work ness is a huge red flag that we haven’t yet gotten to the root of problem
miles: in ny.. we show up w box of chalk and some food.. we start by drawing a neutral/basic thing.. bringing environ into this new world we’re creating w chalk.. then having people w chalk in hand ready to give to anyone.. then if they ask can make suggestions.. once strangers drawing.. more people come in.. may not be in mood to chalk.. but may be in mood to talk about what’s on the ground
again..
