I’m going to say from the outset that I am a supporter of Web3 and Ethereum, really appreciate its pluralistic and positive culture, and read with interest the serious attempts at integrative analysis that are offered by some of its leading figures such as @VitalikButerin. His latest essay is a good example of such thoughtfulness (and realism and moderation). I recommend its reading to anyone.
HOWEVER, I do believe its stays in the realm of superstructural thinking. It sees a world as it is, but doesn’t see possible bifurcations or even collapses. So, while culture is extremely important, as is governance, we cannot abstain from thinking of ‘production’ either, and of the states of our soils, climate, energy and resources reserves.
*the first time i read this sentence i thought he was going to say.. possible alts.. meaning.. vitalik sees world as it is (aka: sea world).. sans graeber make it diff law..
Now, we can legitimately disagree about the latter, BUT, we cannot ignore it.
*The communities, tribes, zones and other formats that Vitalik discusses, require a world that continues functioning as such. But what if it doesn’t? **What if we start experiencing wild swings, civil wars, wars, and more faminies, droughts, storms and floods ?
*still first read thru and i thought this meant.. format ness vitalik describes are same song.. so will just keep perpetuating the whac-a-mole-ing ness of sea world.. of not-us ness.. of part\ial ness.. [again].. for (blank)’s sake..
**then this hit.. made me realize i mis interpreted the above..
Do we not have then need an answer to how production for human needs has to take place ?
to me.. the deeper issue is we don’t get what legit human needs are.. and we keep focusing on survival (in sea world) over life.. when we need a means for life over survival ness.. a means to get back/to the dance
In other words, we are still not at ‘Crypto for Real’, at a full reckoning with material reality. We remain in the world of ethereal programmers who remain cognizant of their world only, and while this knowledge is vitally important, it ain’t enough.
and to me.. it’s not enough.. until we get out of sea world.. hari rat park law et al
For those interested, this would remain a huge difference between approaches and schools of thought that have a thermo-dynamic, and web-of-life inclusive point of view.
to me.. the ‘approach’ and ‘school of thought’ we need to try/see is the thing we’ve not yet tried/seen: the unconditional part of left to own devices ness

Between localists hostile to technology and any social power, and technologist unencombered by the realities of the material world, we have a real gap.
to me.. we found a means to close that gap here: on the ground ness.. and because of that.. i’ve gotten to that warning ness ness
So I’ll say it again, Web3 has half the solution, i.e. the global ‘sitgmergic’ coordination of human labor, in the form of code, and of capital, in the form of tokens. And all the stuff it has been on top of it is hugely innovative and important. But the other half, in fact the more important half in a sense, are in the thousands upon thousands of projects that are taking into account, the state of the soil, the climate, energy and reserves. They remain undercapitalized, and exhausted.
to me.. those aren’t legit 1/2’s (to legit freedom.. to the dance).. mostly because to date.. everything using those are still using them in sea world
The future of humanity, and of the web-of-life that we steward effectively, as we can make them live or die, as we can make ourselves subject to the same fate, depends on the handshake between the two worlds.
again.. makes no diff if there’s a ‘handshake’ as long as we remain in sea world
It’s hardly happening still and that is tragic.
the tragedy is in our fear/denial of the unconditionality needed for the dance to dance..

won’t get to the root of problem until we get out of sea world
legit freedom will only happen if it’s all of us.. and in order to be all of us.. has to be sans any form of measuring, accounting, people telling other people what to do (all the things we can’t seem to let go of in sea world.. just like bruce alexander‘s rats couldn’t ‘let go of’ the heroin till he put them in rat park.. et al)
how we gather in a space is huge.. need to try spaces of permission where people have nothing to prove to facil curiosity over decision making.. because the finite set of choices of decision making is unmooring us.. keeping us from us.. keep us in sea world..
ie: imagine if we listen to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & use that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness)

there’s a legit use of tech (nonjudgmental exponential labeling) to facil the seeming chaos of a global detox leap/dance.. for (blank)’s sake..
ie: whatever for a year.. a legit sabbatical ish transition
just for a year.. or less.. sabbatical ish transition not ridiculous.. et al
otherwise we’ll keep perpetuating the same song.. the whac-a-mole-ing ness of sea world.. of not-us ness.. of part\ial ness.. [again].. for (blank)’s sake..
