P2P Models is a large research project to build Blockchain-powered organizations which are decentralized, democratic and distribute their profits, in order to boost a new type of Collaborative Economy (tweet thread). The project has three legs:
- Infrastructure: Provide a software frameworkto build decentralized infrastructure for Collaborative Economy organizations that do not depend on central authorities.
- Governance: Enable democratic-by-design models of governance for communities, whose rules are, at least partially, encoded in the software to ensure higher levels of equality.
- Economy: Enable value distribution models which are interoperable across organizations, improving the economic sustainability of both contributors and organizations.
The Collaborative Economy is rapidly expanding, but it is dominated by centralized web platforms which hold user data and concentrate all decision-making power andprofits.
P2P Models is a 1.5M€ EU-funded interdisciplinary research effort for bootstrapping the emergence of a new generation of self-governed and more economically sustainable peer-to-peer Collaborative Economy communities. It is a 5-year project (2017-2022) which will be based in the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), with Principal Investigator and advisors from the Berkman Klein Center (Harvard University).
The project will contribute to the Blockchain ecosystem, from a commons-oriented approach (not focused on finance). It will build software modules, grounded on social theory, for the easy building of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations that aim to support collaborative communities. You may get a deeper insight of the project in this 5-page project summary.

Collaborative Economy (CE) (or Sharing Economy) is an emergent socio-economic model where communities of individuals are coordinated through online software platforms for the creation, production, distribution, trade and consumption of goods and services, typically in a peer-to-peer manner. Its volume was estimated to be $15B USD in 2015 and projected to reach $335B USD by 2025
measuring/describing via money.. dang guys
The highly innovative character of P2PMODELS is expected to open new horizons, by *expanding the limits of how software facilitates human collaboration. In the short term, this project will allow us to understand the viability of DAOs as an alternative form of large-scale organization, and the extent to which technical governance is possible to promote human collaboration. In the long term, it enables a new generation of communities where users can collaborate without knowing or even trusting others, relying instead on decentralized infrastructures, with part of their decisions automatically executed by algorithms they define.
short answer – *taking limit of how software facils human collab to infinity.. w/o knowing but always trusting others.. perhaps specific to testing:
WP5: Testing & Community Engagement (M24-M60) will interact and engage with case-study CE communities, test prototypes, and gather feedback. It will empirically validate the WP4 prototypes. It will identify communities interested in larger testing (some are open to this kind of experimentation ). It will use qualitative research (semi-structured interviews, usability testing) and Design Thinking techniques.
long answer –
the Collaborative Economy ecosystem faces 3 key structural challenges:
A) Infrastructure Layer: Centralized Surveillance.. (Surveillance is frequently considered the business model of the internet)
2 convers as infra.. and gershenfeld something else law rendering surveillance irrelevant (because inspectors of inspectors will be doing something else as well – model becomes listening in order to connect – augmenting interconnectedness)
ie: hub of info will come from self-talk as data – mainly cure ios city.. stored in perhaps a blockchain – as hosting-life-bits.. that io dance.. mainly locally by connecting people before mid day with like-people.. same daily curiosity.. that day
B) Governance Layer: Disempowered Communities.. (concentrating the decision-making power at the top)
thinking if we let go enough.. decisions/problems we feel like we need to address today would become irrelevant /non-existent ie: 7bn people talking to themselves first everyday..rather than listening to other feeds (news/friends).. first.. what we need most is the energy of 7bn alive people
C) Economic Layer: Concentration of Profits.. (high entry barriers for new )
2\ state of art tech infra
DAO Development. No comprehensive effort has been undertaken to develop a toolkit for building DAOs, which could make research possible on complex issues including large-scale collaboration, community governance, and distributed economic models. ..P2PMODELS will explore new approaches to building DAOs, focused on enabling a DAO ecosystem for *non-financial purposes, and with appropriate standardization and interoperability.
