Islands in the Future / Museum of Care & the Survival Kit Collection
We are living through a time of profound change. To advance the legacy of David Graeber, we ask: What could a truly progressive and broadly supported project for the future look like?
begs to be something that finally gets at the root of problem.. legit freedom will only happen if it’s all of us.. and in order to be all of us.. has to be sans any form of measuring, accounting, people telling other people what to do
the thing we’ve not yet tried: the unconditional part of left to own devices ness
ie: a sabbatical ish transition
Alongside these conversations, we will also be working on the grand opening of the Museum of Care in St. Vincent. This is not just a space — it is an invitation to rethink how we share knowledge, technologies, and practical tools for building a future that isn’t based on mere survival, but on mutual support and collaboration.
The climate is changing. How about us?
Our second discussion will be a hybrid roundtable, held in St. Vincent with a live audience and an international online community. Participants will include members of the David Graeber Institute, representatives from the government of St. Vincent, and scholars from the University of the West Indies. We will be joined by Andris Brinkmanis, Nika Dubrovsky, Vera Mey, Alastair Parvin and Philippe Pirotte.
This session focuses on the climate crisis and collective resistance. The reality is clear: extreme weather, environmental collapse, and resource scarcity are already here. *The question is not whether we can stop it, but how we can respond.
*ok.. all this you’re doing is great for that then.. but to me.. responding.. any form of re ness.. is still not deep enough to get to the root of problem.. which today we have the means to do.. so in my mind.. we can’t not.. because we can ‘stop’ it.. but not by focusing on it.. we need to go so much deeper.. ie: warning ness et al..
What we’ll explore:
- How can cultural practitioners influence the unfolding crisis?
- How can solidarity networks help can us to adapt?
- What role do decentralized technology hubs play in survival?
- Which tools, knowledge, and infrastructures do we need to share?
to me.. this is what we need: graeber revolution law.. ie: a nother way
We are beyond the point of simply debating degrowth or circular economies. Climate disasters are no longer a distant threat—they are happening now, bringing social and political crises with them. *At the same time, scientific breakthroughs, new technologies, and community-led solutions already exist. The challenge is how to connect them into something bigger.
*exactly.. what we haven’t yet tried (and need most).. tech w/o judgment.. tech as nonjudgmental expo labeling to facil the seeming chaos of a legit global detox leap/re\set
How do we build a future that is fair, sustainable, and liberatory—not just for some, but for all?
to me.. we need to quit saying ‘all’ if we’re still trying part\ial ness.. again.. partial won’t get to the root of problem.. legit freedom will only happen if it’s all of us.. and in order to be all of us.. has to be sans any form of measuring, accounting, people telling other people what to do
Museum of Care & the Survival Kit Collection
The David Graeber Institute is developing an anti-colonial Museum of Care in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines that repurposes an abandoned ship, which will be pulled ashore and installed near the old oceanfront airport. The museum will be organized around the “Survival Kit” collection, which focuses on the maintenance of human life rather than the preservation of art objects.
what we need is to try/see life over survival ness
for that.. need 1st/most: means to undo our hierarchical listening to self/others/nature as global detox/re\set.. so we can org around legit needs
The museum, like a playground, a school, or a public square, is a space where society’s values and political imagination take shape. According to Immanuel Wallerstein and David Graeber, revolutions are not about seizing power but about transforming political common sense.
how we gather in a space is huge.. need to try spaces of permission where people have nothing to prove to facil curiosity over decision making.. because the finite set of choices of decision making is unmooring us.. keeping us from us..
ie: imagine if we listened to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & used that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness)
again.. the thing we’ve not yet tried/seen: the unconditional part of left to own devices ness .. [‘in an undisturbed ecosystem ..the individual left to its own devices.. serves the whole’ –dana meadows]
there’s a legit use of tech (nonjudgmental exponential labeling) to facil the seeming chaos of a global detox leap/dance.. the unconditional part of left-to-own-devices ness.. for (blank)’s sake.. and we’re missing it
ie: whatever for a year.. a legit sabbatical ish transition
In this spirit, we are inviting scholars, journalists, designers, architects, and artists to discuss how we can *engage with and respond to the expanding crisis—not just with critique, but with **practical solutions
*to me.. these are red flag words
**what the world needs most is the energy of 8b alive people
we keep disturbing the ecosystem because we can’t seem to let go enough to see/try the unconditional part of left to own devices ness
gershenfeld something else law: possibly one of the best/most significant impacts of tech is tech that gives people something else to do – neil gershenfeld [aka: whatever they want]

notes/quotes from meeting:
nika (from st vincent): why st vincent.. think caribbeans important place.. very special.. so many mix of cultures.. survived such a brutal history.. for us.. extremely important to be integrated into the community so started thinking about museum and public spaces.. (intro’d speakers.. co-founder of dgi)
nika: developing concept of museum.. wouldn’t preserve objects.. but *develop survival kit.. **techs that can care for human life
*need to try life over survival ness
**the thing we’ve not yet tried/seen: the unconditional part of left to own devices ness
[‘in an undisturbed ecosystem ..the individual left to its own devices.. serves the whole’ –dana meadows]
there’s a legit use of tech (nonjudgmental exponential labeling) to facil the seeming chaos of a global detox leap/dance.. the unconditional part of left-to-own-devices ness.. for (blank)’s sake.. and we’re missing it
ie: whatever for a year.. a legit sabbatical ish transition
nika: public spaces, particularly playground
andris brinkmanis: very brief presentation – island in the future.. 2nd time here.. last time i led meeting of building a playground.. then found need to update.. change level of project.. so that’s what i’m bringing.. nowadays people very interested in ai.. has some benes.. what we can bring to island is diff type of intell.. artistic intell .. artists think outside box.. this is what we want to attempt thru dgi
andris: show how some ideas done.. 1\ informal building as work of art 2\ new babylon – all bout communal living.. not yet been realized.. global tools (a collective).. to render life quality better.. not just looking to future but also some to past.. creative idea to very practical shape.. ie: relearning how to farm.. school to become shepherd.. cooking as art..
andris: now we want to go from playground to museum.. ie: park in copenhagen.. brought together pieces form all over the world.. so seems weird.. can’t locate.. new type of public space where all welcome to be together..
[20 ish herer]
andris: what we want to do is create open source tools in st vincent that can be used by everyone ie: visual assembly to involve communities in planning
clive russell: great ie of what andris talking about.. garden.. given to community slowly and begrudgingly.. i’m going to talk about 2 design groups from the past.. my past is in activism.. but doesn’t have to be just that.. i’m going to start by talking about money.. since money determines everything.. always given on basis of return on investment.. grown into crazy production/consumption nightmare.. but we need solutions that don’t make money.. rather.. we need roi that is social capital.. but instead all we have is uncertainty.. but not unprecedented.. in past.. these periods have created massive explosions of creativity.. that’s the way we question things.. arts and craft movement by bauhaus.. replacing genius of artist and rather.. artist is everyone.. a product must have a social purpose.. all this rings true w david’s work.. ‘rip up econ as exists and start over .. sub care and freedom for production/consumption.. we need to break away from that paradigm entirely.. so how to care for each other.. scrap almost all of econ.. we can make a better way to live together..
ie: a sabbatical ish transition
nika: now would like to talk about playground.. that’s our immediate project..
alastair parvin: in order to be socially useful.. wanted to not design buildings.. but designing system in which other people can build.. redesign systems that underpin cities.. new ways of ownership and planning.. et al.. so wiki house.. so nika and i got talking about this vision of playgrounds.. the question.. what would be the similar approach.. the infra for these public spaces.. the spatial infra to support the commons..
alstair: what would be the core principles: easy to use/change; low cost & available materials; modular; simple to build; efficient; shareable as code; open source
nika: we also talked about.. who will use the playground..
[people in st vincent asking questions.. but can’t hear any of them.. one was repeated.. about how to sustain playgrounds]
nika: on using playground to connect people.. question is how to expand.. for me.. important question is who will take care of it..
we want something educational not just entertainment.. where everybody can feel a part..
ooof.. the thing we’ve not tried: the unconditional part of left to own devices ness.. that’s why you have to keep asking: how to sustain, who will take care of it, et al.. none of that will happen until we let go enough to see the dance
nika: inbetween playground and market (?)
colin harvey (online): i build adventure playgrounds.. we think about affordances.. that have lots of uses.. but not an artwork.. how you are thinking of social dimension of explaining to people who may come use it.. that it’s not an artwork they’re viewing.. but something they can work with.. how do you tell them you are part of this and it’s not an outside project
local: there are artists willing to take up this projects.. and take to next gen
another local: on school ness.. on the essential ness of building partnerships for support.. when people educated on what’s going on in project.. they benefit
