The End of Mass-Based Society
https://johnrobb.substack.com/p/the-end-of-mass?
John Robb: “Mass, the organizing principle of the twentieth century’s societal operating system, is dead or dying. Here’s what this means, and how to think about what comes next.”
and more about same link from michel [https://x.com/mbauwens/status/2093639496872915332?s=20]:
It’s really important to understand this:
“over the past decade, mass media’s power has evaporated. Besieged by rapid technological shifts that have packetized content and fragmented audiences, its audience has dwindled to a shrinking pool of aging boomers, with most of its remaining audience over 55.
Packetized media didn’t just shrink mass media’s audience by changing delivery patterns; it also removed the possibility of shared narratives, facts, and reality.
The collapse of mass that we saw in media is spreading.”
notes/quotes from john’s 2026 substack:
The End of Mass – Mass, the organizing principle of the twentieth century’s societal operating system, is dead or dying. Here’s what this means, and how to think about what comes next.
Mass, the organizing principle of the twentieth century’s societal operating system, is dead or dying. Here’s what this means, and how to think about what comes next.
Mass is the forced convergence of many people, products, institutions, and behaviors into a common middle through standardized systems of production, distribution, and coordination.
Mass; many units compressed into common form.
Scale; many units produced in volume.
Network; a connection between many units without regard to commonality.Adapting to the Future
This delusion, amplified by the stress of institutional collapse and the chaos of fragmented public discourse, makes it nearly impossible for us to adapt to a future remade by networks, AI, and robotics.
- We don’t yet have an organizing principle to tame it with (like mass did with the technologies of industrial civilization), nor are we likely to find one in the near to medium term.
but we do have the means to let it dance
there’s a legit use of tech (nonjudgmental exponential labeling) to facil the seeming chaos of a global detox leap/dance
- As a result, we are likely to see a future built by an organizing principle foisted upon us by the technology itself.
what we need is for the tech to do what we can’t seem to do .. ie: tech w/o judgment
ie: need means (nonjudgmental expo labeling) to undo hierarchical listening – so we can hear what’s already on each heart as global detox in order to org around legit needs
- A *good candidate for this is time. It may not be the final concept, but it is **good enough to explore the effects of changing the organizing concept.
*a better one is unconditionality (of tech)
because **this won’t legit change anything.. will just perpetuate same song
A Society Built on Time
Time, as an organizing principle, forces society to stratify based on the productivity and leverage that networks, AI, and robotics provide individuals.
*great ie of why this won’t change anything.. those are all cancerous distractions
- In a society organized by time, all the benefits of society flow to the fastest.
- Speed depends on the leverage AI, robotics, and networks provide.
- If you own millions of artificial workers, you win.
- If your thinking is heavily augmented (in the way software engineers are using AI today to become 10x more productive), you win.
the ‘speed leverage’ we need is the exponential part of nonjudgmental expo labeling – aka – need a global detox leap
the ‘millions’ ness we need is the all/unconditional part of nonjudgmental expo labeling
and the ‘augment’ ness we need is the labeling part of nonjudgmental expo labeling
what the world needs most is the energy of 8b alive people
humanity needs a leap.. to get back/to simultaneous spontaneity .. simultaneous fittingness.. everyone in sync.. the dance
findings from on the ground ness deep dive on why we need tech w/o judgment:
ie: the dance won’t dance unless/until it’s 1\ all of us 2\ legit free
nothing to date (ever since that day) has gotten to that (org/mass/whatever) root of problem
legit freedom will only happen if it’s all of us.. and in order to be all of us.. has to be sans any form of measuring, accounting, people telling other people what to do
ie: imagine if we listen to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & use that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness)
the thing we’ve not yet tried/seen: the unconditional part of left to own devices ness
[‘in an undisturbed ecosystem ..the individual left to its own devices.. serves the whole’ –dana meadows]
again.. there’s a legit use of tech (nonjudgmental exponential labeling) to facil the seeming chaos of a global detox leap/dance
ie: whatever for a year.. a legit sabbatical ish transition
otherwise we’ll keep perpetuating the same song.. the whac-a-mole-ing ness of sea world.. of not-us ness.. of part\ial ness.. perpetuating survival triage.. for (blank)’s sake..
