ethan zuckerman on global voices – 2023 interview – ‘Harnessing the internet to create unprecedented global connection’: an interview with Ethan Zuckerman – Global Voices amplifies voices from all over the world – Written byJuke Carolina – [https://globalvoices.org/2023/04/21/harnessing-the-internet-to-create-unprecedented-global-connection-an-interview-with-ethan-zuckerman/] – via global voices tweet [https://twitter.com/globalvoices/status/1650449515328200704?s=20]
notes/quotes from interview – part 1:
How could we use the internet, the possibility that people could speak and listen to each other in a new and in sort of unprecedented way, and actually use it for global connection?..t
great/important focus/question..
need 1st/most: means to undo our hierarchical listening to self/others/nature so we can org around legit needs
So, we wrote a manifesto about the right to listen and to hear each other, and Rebecca and I started the work of maintaining a blog, a global voices blog that was trying to amplify voices from all over the world. What we realized very quickly was that it (keeping track of these different conversations) was way too big for two people and particularly too big for two Americans, it needed people in all parts of the world we were working with to be part of it.
So I think we just very quickly saw in each other, someone who had a different view of what technology could do and what we might do with it. . t And that was a real transformative moment for both of us. So I think we just saw in each other, someone who wants to know more broadly about the world.
imagine if we listened to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & used that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness)
notes/quotes from interview part 2 – ‘The internet is full of good intentions’: an interview with Ethan Zuckerman, part two – Community-driven approaches are key to a better future – [https://globalvoices.org/2023/04/21/the-internet-is-full-of-good-intentions-an-interview-with-ethan-zuckerman-part-two/]:
You now see people like *Shoshana Zuboff who wrote this brilliant book on surveillance capitalism, essentially saying ‘yeah, and this all is part of an economy that is deeply unhealthy for us and **we’ve got to find an alternative models.’ ..t I think being able to talk about this and talk about the history how we got here was very helpful.
*shoshana zuboff.. age of surveillance capitalism..
**oikos (the economy our souls crave).. ‘i should say: the house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.’ – gaston bachelard, the poetics of space
The truth is we’ve seen some good attempts to try to increase internet privacy, particularly within the European context but so far they have not been nearly successful enough..t
need: gershenfeld something else law: possibly one of the best/most significant impacts of tech is tech that gives people something else to do – neil gershenfeld
but we haven’t seen nearly enough innovation in terms of what a different model could be..t
because our deeper problem (and opportunity) is that we can’t hear every voice
imagine if we used the exponentiation ness of tech/web for that
While intentions are important, Ethan Zuckerman believes that well-intentioned but misguided approaches, such as those rooted in cryptocurrency, are not the solution to the future of social media. Instead, Ethan advocates for learning from groups focused on decentralization and community-driven efforts, particularly those grounded in real-world communities.
I think almost everyone is coming from a place of good intentions. I just think that a lot of people are wrong..t
taleb center of problem law.. begs.. we’re (someone is) quiet enough to hear/see
ie: org around a problem deep enough (aka: org around legit needs) to resonate w/8bn today.. via a mechanism simple enough (aka: tech as it could be) to be accessible/usable to 8bn today.. and an ecosystem open enough (aka: sans any form of m\a\p) to set/keep 8bn legit free
You have to look at the examples of people who are trying to create interesting, new ways of building social media. Preferably from those who are grounded in real, existing communities in the world..t
1\ undisturbed ecosystem (common\ing) can happen
2\ if we create a way to ground the chaos of 8b legit free people
If that’s the question, “Is an investment in social media dead?” the answer is yeah, maybe. But here’s the thing, we need a space to have conversations and a lot of the work I’ve been doing right now is around the relationships between the public spheres and democracy. You can not have a democracy if there’s no way for citizens to talk with one another about what they think about politics and society. If you don’t have a public sphere, there’s no way for people to decide and vote. You need to have that ability for people to learn about candidates and decide. It’s inherent.
oh my.. need a legit nother way – where we have ie: curiosity over decision making.. because decision making is unmooring us.. finite set of choices.. keeping us from us.. et al
infinitesimal structures approaching the limit of structureless\ness and/or vice versa .. aka: ginorm/small ness
Where I think we need to keep thinking and keep working is we wanna make sure that this pathway remains open and particularly that it remains open for people who may not have another way of making their voices heard.
not just about having your voice heard ie: seat at the table just gets us same song
need 1st/most: means to undo our hierarchical listening to self/others/nature so we can org around legit needs
imagine if we listened to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & used that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness)
