the only name we have is the name they gave us – users.. and that is not ok..  a new era of capital that is no longer confined to the econ domain

i wonder if this is our time to emerge from this .. ‘users’.. as we begin to id our true interests.. and new forms of collective/collab action..

on capitalism ness – from claiming resources ie nature.. to claiming private human experience.. reborn as behavioral data.. to produce predictions of human behavior.. prediction products

predict\able ness

markets in behavior futures – buying predictions of future behavior in order to make money.. depends on social relations of the one way mirror.. hunt/take outside of people’s awareness.. had to be secret .. to keep us users in ignorance.. our ignorance has been their bliss

i spent 7 yrs literally locked away writing this book.. guidance from imagining my children’s future.. seeing into and being afraid of what i saw.. simple step to be worried about everybody’s children..

p 521 – the historically contingent nature of the thing that has us.. before began campaign of psychic numbing.. it is not ok to have to hide your own life.. (redefine) search, friend, recognition)..  not ok for every move to be catalogued.. to herd us thru future tense for someone else’s profit.. don’t take them for granted.. they are not ok.. who decides who decides

she also said this was new.. i don’t think so

q&a

same structure of notice and consent.. without the burning part.. human experience was the new virgin wood.. the thing that could be claimed/monetized.. a vision of unilateral dispossession

stages of dispossession in order to institutionalize (it) and to de mobilize (people)..

surveillance capitalism is about predicting future behavior.. best predictions approximate observation.. ie: econ of action.. comes from intervening in the state of play and manipulating so it moves in direction of outcomes that align w commercial objectives.. bypass awareness of individuals in order to herd

in order to move toward best predictions.. emphasis is toward totality – i call it radical indifference..

begs discrimination as equity.. where line of best fit is shown to be a farce at best.. and more to the point – inhumane

this has nothing to do w the digital.. this is about econ.. this is very good news..

democracy is like.. chasing a (hoola) hoop.. you catch it before it falls over.. that’s the game.. always have to be by its side to keep it rolling.. democracy is the hoop.. it’s not like one generation did it and we all sit back and take pics.. we’ve all got to do it

resonating to everyone.. everyday.. but begs as the day.. or it won’t work

democracy

livestream died.. i think/hope i just missed the last question – danah’s

___________

16 min clip on democracy now march 2 2019 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo6K-bPh39M] – Age of Surveillance Capitalism: “We Thought We Were Searching Google, But Google Was Searching Us”

fb getting the public reprimand.. but it’s only the beginning of the scope of players (previous was paraphrase) – not just a single co or not just a couple of co’s

5 min – once you understand that surveillance capitalism is an econ logic.. it is not the same as tech.. this is one of the big lies that has been perpetuated that these methodologies are the only way digi tech can work.. that there’s an inevitablist propaganda that has been fed to us.. we need to pull these issues apart

6 min – we have digi tech which we believed would be emancipatory/empowering/democratizing.. and it still can be. in the last 20 years it has been overtaken/hijacked.. by an econ logic whose econ imperatives put it on a collision course w democracy both from below/above

one of the things that surveillance capitalism has learned.. is that the most powerful predictions of human behavior.. come from actually intervening in our behavior.. touching our behavior.. to nudge/influence/tune/herd our behavior toward its commercial outcomes..t

that’s been going on forever.. ie: supposed to’s.. of school/work

manufacturing consent.. voluntary compliance .. wilde not us law.. freedom.. spinach or rock.. social control.. et al

sounds like chomsky from years ago.. and probably many before that.. ie: control via write ing ness

7 min – and what this has done is made them take hold of the digital media (medilia) all of our devices beginning w the phone/laptops.. but the sensors.. the facial recognition, smart techs/cities.. all this digi infra now has been taken by surveillance capitalism as a way to nudge/tune/herd our behavior toward its guaranteed outcomes

it does this w subliminal cues.. it’s a highly scientific process.. it does this in ways that it brags about are always outside of our awareness so that we have no right of combat.. so that we can’t resist/say-no/exit

gray play law

this is what i call a global means of behavior modification..t

again – manufacturing consent.. voluntary compliance .. wilde not us law.. freedom.. spinach or rock.. social control.. et al

where essentially this great digi architecture we’ve built in order to be an emancipatory/life-giving process for us and help us in our lives.. has now become commandeered by surveillance capitalism as a means to mod our behavior toward its commercial ends.. which is a direct assault on human autonomy.. on our decision rights.. on the whole notion of individual sovereignty

rights.. sovereignty .. et al

70s decided behavior mod was a pernicious action.. no fed money would fund a program based on it.. today in 2019.. last 2 decades.. had been able to command the digital.. w/o anybody saying no.. and/or understanding what’s occurred

before that

13 min – every week we get mobilized around mini scandals.. and these mini scandals are utterly predictable.. t

predict\able ness

15 min – biggest revelation to me.. we’re entering the 21st cent now w a new domain of social ineq.. we’ve been focused on econ ineq.. it’s tremendously important.. now.. private surveillance capital has institutionalized asymmetries of knowledge.. unlike anything ever seen in human history.. they know everything about us.. we know almost nothing about them..t

yet data on us is non legit.. as if from whales at sea world

I’ve dedicated this part of my life to understanding and conceptualizing the transition to an information civilization.

what if it’s more about connection than info.. (or could be.. info about local connections via daily curiosities  ie: cure ios city) and we’re missing it..

There’s a lot of work to be done, if we are to build bridges to the kind of future that we can call “home.”  My new book on this subject, The Age of Surveillance Capitalism:The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power, will be published by PublicAffairs in the U.S. (available January 15, 2019) and Campus Verlag in Germany.

Shoshana Zuboff joined the Harvard Business School faculty in 1981. One of the first tenured women at the school, she was the Charles Edward Wilson Professor of Business Administration. In 2014 and 2015 she was a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. Her career has been devoted to the study of the rise of the digital, its individual, organizational, and social consequences, and its relationship to the history and future of capitalism. She also founded and led the executive education program, Odyssey: School for the Second Half of Life.

Shoshana Zuboff’s latest book is The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power. This new work integrates Zuboff’s lifelong themes: the historical emergence of psychological individuality, the conditions for human development, the digital revolution, and the evolution of capitalism. It begins with the oldest questions: home or exile? master or slave? It explores the emergence of surveillance capitalism as the dominant form of information capitalism and its implications for individuals, society, and democracy in the twenty-first century.
