william gillis

first caught my attention here: gillis on small scale and center for stateless society
then while reading some of his articles on david graeber in anarchist library [debt.. the possibilities ignored and beyond hellish choice of process docs] – didn’t like his take on math (debt one p 5&6) and his cutting ness of david.. so googled him and found this 30 min video from 2016 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leW18Q8SnMk] – William Gillis on Anarchy, Ethics, and Everything Inbetween.. and decided to add page
notes/quotes from video:
8 min – focused not on pleasure or happiness.. but agency.. the good for me is to max choice.. if you are asked ‘what ought be done’.. that’s the ethical question.. the only thing it presumes.. is the notion of choice.. you only face that question when you have a choice.. and nothing else is implied in that structure besides choice.. t
oi.. i think once you bring in word ‘ought’.. and i guess even the word ‘choice’.. there is no real agency.. it’s all about supposed to‘s.. [saw/experimented with this deeply and first hand – findings abstract et al]
what we need – for max freedom.. for max scale.. is curiosity over decision making
we need to let go of any form of finite set of choices.. any form of m\a\p
9 min – max choice/agency.. in a world that’s well networked..
imagine if we listened to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & used that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness)
need 1st/most: means to undo our hierarchical listening to self/others/nature ie: tech as it could be
10 min – our connection with other people blurs our identity with them..
brown belonging law – need a means that we don’t blur because of others.. so we stay us while never just me
13 min – markets are possible w/o a dog eat dog.. we (c4ss) differentiate between markets and capitalism.. markets are just a way of exchange.. flow of info thru revealed preference.. capitalism is more than just exchange.. it’s systematic concentrations of capital/power/wealth.. they grow out of control and suppress constraints on the rest of us.. markets are biased by systemic structures of ie: racism et al
marsh exchange law.. any form of m\a\p.. cancerous distractions
10-day-care-center\ness et al
17 min – anarchism is about combatting all forms of domination/oppression/abuse.. so on large scale in politics.. capitalism is a major concern
18 min – on social capital.. your standing.. degree people trust you.. it accumulates like capital.. allows you to do certain things not able to otherwise
makes no diff if not legit you.. any form of m\a\p deforms us from possibility of an undisturbed ecosystem.. (and so just keeps perpetuating myth of tragedy and lord et al)
21 min – the state holds back sci progress in a huge way.. i defn sci as a radical process that compresses info.. sci as we know it confined ie: can only take place in academia et al.. intertwined w that military complex and capitalist society.. fundamental research dies.. unless can sell it for use in bombs et al..
23 min – scientists hate that they’re pushed to immediate results.. we have a world that only like when immediate payoff
29 min – advice for anarchists: don’t give up.. then recommends to read kevin carson
kevin carson.. kevin on democracy.. kevin on credit.. kevin on justifiers of ineq.. kevin on 100 flowers.. kevin on anarchism w/o adj.. et al
