rutger on school for moral ambition

via rutger bregman tweet thread [https://x.com/rcbregman/status/1810998522185130267]:

I’ve got some big news to share today! 1) I’m moving to New York City 2) We’re looking for a CEO for The School for Moral Ambition

For those who don’t know me: I’ve spent ten years in what I like to call the ‘awareness-business’: writing articles and books, giving talks and sending lots of tweets about the many problems in this world. /2

I’ve built up an audience, gone viral, got invited by Seth Meyers and Trevor Noah, got disinvited by the World Economic Forum, and yet I’m plagued by a nagging feeling that I haven’t done much to make this world a better place. /3

wish you could hear me.. hello.. need tech as it could be to facil a sabbatical ish transition.. otherwise.. all the forms of people telling other people what to do and so same song

Not long ago, I had an idea. Imagine an alliance of ambitious idealists who think awareness is not enough. Imagine an organization that would empower small groups of pioneers to make a historic difference. /4

Imagine a movement of builders, who take on the biggest and most neglected challenges of our time, and who will persevere until they’ve accomplished their goals. And we’ll call it: The School for Moral Ambition. /5

This School would be founded on a simple conviction: the most ambitious people should work on the important global problems. We need our brightest minds to make pandemics history, end factory farming, fight the tobacco industry, safeguard our democracies.. /6

oi rutger..

if want this: work on important global problems (ie: missing pieces; almaas holes law)

don’t do this: from thread: talk/think/believe ‘brightest minds’ “most ambitious people.. and from link below: strategy, managing, book, fundraise, oversee, ..

We are seeking an experienced and energetic CEO to lead the US launch and global expansion of SMA. Responsibilities include setting foundation strategy, building and managing a team, leveraging the book launch, fundraising, and overseeing P&L.

intellectness as cancerous distraction
we can’t seem to let go of.. there’s a legit use of tech (nonjudgmental expo labeling).. to facil the seeming chaos of a legit global detox leap.. for (blank)’s sake.. and we’re missing it

legit freedom will only happen if it’s all of us.. and in order to be all of us.. has to be sans any form of measuringaccountingpeople telling other people what to do

how we gather in a space is huge.. need to try spaces of permission where people have nothing to prove to facil curiosity over decision making.. because the finite set of choices of decision making is unmooring us.. keeping us from us..

ie: whatever for a year.. a legit sabbatical ish transition

ie: imagine if we listened to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & used that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness)

rest of thread:

… and these are just a few examples. The School would craft a theory of victory to tackle such problems, and work towards concrete milestones. /7

To attract talented people from all over the globe, ‘moral ambition’ should become a well-known lifestyle, just like mindfulness or minimalism. We would build a movement of people who crave more impact in their career. /8

Then, we’d use our network to find and support the most talented individuals to switch to high impact roles, or to start promising new initiatives. A team of ambitious philanthropists would support this talent with the necessary funding. /9

A couple of months ago, we started a pilot for the School here in my native The Netherlands. My Dutch co-founders and I began the development of our community activities, fellowships and online platform. /10

We’ve hired our first researchers and program managers, and found our first ambassadors.. /11

But the Netherlands is a small country. Yes, we’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons, but the real testing ground will be the United States. So in September I am moving to NYC with my family to prepare for the international launch of the School in April 2025. /12

In the next couple of months, we hope to find our CEO. Are you the person we’re looking for? You can find the job description here: https://moralambition.eu/jobs/ceo-the-school-for-moral-ambition-north-america… The deadline for applications is August 17. I look forward to getting to know you! /13
