16 min – best thinkers/artists/etc.. have dynamic equilib of both .. business program that you’ve been talking about and that i’ve slightly resisted.. i think is where it’s at in a way… because artist wants to have traction…if they have a motive to improve society.. and if they do that they have to have docks/interfaces w society… and business plan does that.. because your livelihood is dependent upon society as an artist if that’s what you want to do.. at same time.. you can be become appropriated by tastes of artist that is less awake.. they tell you what they want.. but you’re trying to pay a mortgage… on a subconscious level.. can’t upset people too much… yet artist is uniquely positioned to awaken people… but how can he do that if needs money from these people to pay mortgage..- mark

i need to find a way to fulfill my needs.. self-actualization can conflict with survival needs… argument that can say that experience of struggle et al.. can fuel our art… – marco

van gogh – taking on all these demons… but had a leg up… ie: someone grown up in poverty.. didn’t have ie: ed of van gogh – mark

also nietzche – had some kind of a pension.. not that he was wealthy.. but taken care of .. that’s what allowed him to articulate this radical view of role of artist in society – marco

life and death.. nothing to lose.. nothing to gain.. one of dangers of bp for artist… all oriented toward making artist comfortable… for me .. greatest art comes from life/death struggle… i want to know what scares/challenges you… if we have a bp and trying to make everything comfortable.. as artists.. are we going to feel that life/death… i think there is a leap of faith… me saying.. i’m going to be 100% authentic.. whatever that takes.. full stop…if we’re not doing life/death art.. what are we doing…. – mark

25 min – on activism and jim crow… and taking care of my brothers who are marginalized…oppressed.. if i’ve got my bp/comfort.. i’m going to be wary of something that might take that away… i’ve got my two kids to feed… when something is not stageable.. you stage it anyway… nothing to gain nothing to lose… do you really think someone who takes the time to make a bp is going to do that (live with abandon) – mark
