horizon modules

Yesterday, I received a connection request that caught my eye. It was from “Modular for Affordable Dwellings.” Initially, I cringed, thinking it was just another initiative pushing tiny shacks as a solution for homelessness. However, upon visiting their website https://horizonmodules.com/floor-plans/, I realized these are actual homes, not tiny boxes meant for lawn equipment.

The model I’m showcasing is priced at $60k. Yes, it’s significantly more than the $14k tiny boxes from Pallet Shelter, but let’s address the reality: those tiny shacks are not truly temporary. Despite what politicians claim, there’s a harsh truth—they know there’s no real housing solution in place. A friend of mine has been stuck in one of those shacks for over three years, continuously told she’ll be moved into proper housing, yet there’s no actual plan. Imagine the trauma of living in a cramped space for years, believing it’s temporary, only to realize it’s not.

Reflecting on a previous discussion and this new information, it’s clear that the affordable housing crisis won’t be resolved soon. Warehousing people in tiny shacks is inhumane and unsustainable. Over time, it’s evident that homeless individuals won’t thrive in such conditions. If provided with genuine homes, the outcomes would be significantly better because they would have a sense of permanence. Coupled with supportive services, this could be a real solution.

So, why not move towards providing actual, livable homes like these modular units? Sadly, public sentiment often leans towards blaming homeless individuals for their situation, leading to reluctance in spending on effective solutions. Politicians, under pressure to cut costs, contribute to the worsening crisis.

The push for forced camps is growing, and should Trump win the election, the reality of “forced sanctioned camps” could come faster than we think. The tiny shack movement is the foundation to this disturbing trend.

Modular homes, though pricier than tiny shacks, offer a refreshing and humane alternative. They can serve as permanent residences. When paired with support services, they provide a viable solution. Yes, they come with a higher upfront cost, but the long-term return on investment is substantial. More importantly, this approach respects the dignity of homeless individuals, offering them housing with essential amenities like bathrooms, kitchens, and a sense of stability. It’s time to prioritize real, dignified solutions over inadequate, temporary fixes.
