My TEDx talk ‘From Egoism to Ecoism: #Psychedelics and #Nature Connection’. A very special thanks to the brilliant @ros_watts for gifting me the opportunity & @RCarhartHarris & @Imperial_PRG for kindly allowing me to use their fantastic unpublished data. (

in 65 – s brand lsd experience on roof in san fran.. felt he could perceive the curvature of the earth.. sent photo to congress.. why haven’t we gotten a pic like this.. could it have influenced nasa to snap photo of earth few years later.. astronauts into space experience a cognitive shift call the overview effect – a view of profound unity.. planetary unity/interconnection and the desire to protect the planet

a similar perspective shift can be reliably induced by experiences of psych substances.. both science of ecology which is my background.. and the experience of psychedelics.. give one direct knowledge of this interconnection

2 min – this is a planet in crisis – 6th mass extinction due entirely to human action on the biosphere.. this ongoing ecological crisis seems to stem in part from a crisis of human connection

ai humanity needs..augmenting interconnectedness

it is unfortunate that humans seem to be becoming ever more disconnected from each other and the natural world

3 min – when we fall out of love w nature we can bear its destruction

holmgren indigenous law

when we destroy our own home.. on some level.. do we fall out of love w ourselves

oikos ness

a disconnection w nature is just one aspect of depression.. but one that has an important implications for our species and the biosphere.. ongoing eco destruction can be considered to be directly linked to this human nature disconnect

it seems if there was some form of catalyst that could reliably facilitate human nature connection it could be of immense value.. it turns out such catalysts exist and have in fact been used by some humans for centuries/millennia

recent studies on psych’s increase feelings of nature connection.. unity/interconnection w natural world

5 min – (on research not yet published).. the degree of change in nature relatedness was also correlated w well being post psychedelic

well-being and fittingness

6 min – most w psilocybin – mushroom – on depression and connection to nature

7 min – image – interconnectivity of brain comparing psilocybin (much more) and placebo

under psilocybin default mode of brain – becomes relaxed and deactivated.. allows for increase in brian communication.. allowing for a more unified/interconnected brain

8 min – the psychedelic ego disillusion experience seems to be the mech thru which perceived boundaries between self and others dissolve.. catalyzing an expanded perspective of self/nature overlap

a rigid ego.. seems to play an important part .. in both depression and nature disconnection..t

hard won order ness.. carhart-harris entropy law

when egoic separateness wards us off in private prisons and disconnects us from the world around us.. it makes sense that we’re not feeling a burning responsibility for nature.. or a desire to protect it

and yet.. an increase in interconnectedness.. a feeling of being part of nature.. appears to be a primary facet of the psychedelic experience

thurman interconnectedness law

9 min – that’s not to say that psychedelics are necessary to connect with nature.. to do that.. you’re got to get into it

our species has spent almost its entire existence living in natural environments from which our physiology has adapted.. direct physical sensory exposure to nature has been shown to increase nature connectedness.. while leading to a decrease in anxiety and an increase in well being.. exposure to nature acts as a potent health tonic and buffer.. leads to marked reductions in stress.. decreased levels of depression and anxiety.. increased resilience and pro social behavior.. elevated self esteem and an enhanced capacity for engagement learning in children and adolescents

depression, anxiety, unwanted stress..

10 min – another study on health benes.. reduced diabetes, premature death, pre term birth, high blood pressure, cholesterol

5 min in nature enough to increase mood.. 1/2 hr in course of a week sufficient to lower blood pressure and depression

11 min – being in nature naturally puts one into a mindful state.. which itself has been linked to anti depressant/anxiety effects..

tribal indigenous cultures tend to live more ecological sustainable and individualistic lives than the rest of civilized people

jensen civilization law.. civilization et al

13 min – what if.. instead of vilifying these compounds we held them in the same high regard.. as some indigenous cultures do.. how different might our global future look..

any means thru which humans can better id and connect with nature to increase awareness/acceptance of the ecological self.. should be considered of utmost importance.. and id-ing any factors that facil/enhance this process should be considered a very important human endeavor

albert hofmann (a yr before his death age 101): alienation from nature and the loss of the experience of being part of the living creation is the greatest tragedy of our materialistic era. it is the causative reason for ecological devastation and climate change. therefore i attribute absolute highest importance to consciousness change. i regard psychedelics as catalyzers for this

14 min – to ensure preservation/survival of the biosphere will require a fundamental psychological shift.. we need to transcend our sense of separateness.. urgently regain our connection to nature

As psilocybin mushrooms enter mainstream medicine, a power struggle seems to be taking shape between those motivated by profit, and those motivated by healing, spiritual growth and “advancing the human condition”

In May 2019, Denver, Colorado, became the first US city to decriminalize psilocybin mushrooms after an ordinance was admitted to the ballot and voted on.

In June 2019, Oakland became the second U.S. city to decriminalize psilocybin mushrooms

Original Tweet:

“Whilst I’m all for psychedelic science – I think it’s fantastic – I don’t think we necessarily have time to wait for the science to tell us these medicines are useful. The indigenous cultures have already shown us the ways.”
