The State We’re In (Part 2): Social Progress in Chile With or Without the State?[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO-lVxvLAus&t=1s]
Across the world people often try to use the powers they have been granted by the state to bring about social change. And sometimes they strive to go beyond the state to create autonomous enclaves.
In this session, facilitated by Fiona Harrington, Fernando Quintana will discuss recent attempts to replace the Chilean constitution, originally imposed during the 1973 military coup in which General Augusto Pinochet replaced Chile’s first socialist president, Salvadore Allende. One of Museum of Care’s members will summarise some of David Graeber’s ideas of democracy and ask why did occupy refuse to respond to the demand to make demands?
For the discussion, find below some excerpts from the writing of David Graeber on Democracy & the Occupy Movement. A piece by Fernando Quintana on recent politics in Chile can be found [here]. The Occupy New York Declaration is [here].

notes/quotes from video:
27 min – i read the constitution and it was really challenging
oi.. constitution ness.. any form of m\a\p
32 min – on main responsibility for revolutionaries.. care for assembles
oi.. in a space ..ie: imagine if we ness
35 min – michael: on graeber’s approach .. via summary of readings.. [p 82-95 fragments of an anarchist anthropology].. ‘iothis is what democracy looks like.. to him .. like direct action..
39 min – michael: in most small groups.. where isn’t power of imposition.. then decision making becomes by consensus.. very much negotiating .. david says this process happens all the time.. all over the world in places where there isn’t an imposition
oi.. public consensus always oppresses someone(s).. decision making is unmooring us law
40 min – m: to david majority demo was military based..
oi .. any form of m\a\p
42 min – m: on the democracy project.. and not playing by the rules..
1:10 – nika: so.. define who are we.. question of power a bad recipe..
1:12 – n: so what is revolution.. for me.. rearranging the common sense of how we as human beings start to think differently and not how a certain group of people who we hope are good guys took over the power because the power structure is all the same..t we have to rearrange all of them.. that’s why i (if citizen of chile) would do my best to help citizens assembly run .. ie: rojava.. could there be more hope in that
huge.. who’s together in a space
imagine if we listened to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & used that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness as nonjudgmental expo labelin
1:14 – m: if want change by all people .. it’s not just getting them to agree at one moment.. it is.. how nika put it.. to change the common sense .. might be their psych feelings about many of the issues .. how to be in process to create more collective change..
1:17 – fernando: to go beyond state.. need to engage state in some way.. for me key question – what kind of strategy/design can help us engage state.. while at same time preserving the alt popular subjects and nurturing spaces of self org.. that emerge spontaneously in protests..t
unjustifiable strategy.. gershenfeld something else law
there’s a legit use of tech (nonjudgmental expo labeling).. to facil a legit global detox leap.. for (blank)’s sake.. and we’re missing it
legit freedom will only happen if it’s all of us.. and in order to be all of us.. has to be sans any form of m\a\p
1:19 – f: problem of assembly is not how to put best members in it.. but how to design it so that it is tied to this broader/popular institutionality that emerges in course of some org .. i don’t think i have an answer to what is that design
1:20 – n: on ignoring rather than engaging state..
1:22 – ivette: i’m from global s and we need state there
black science of people/whales law – we have no idea
n: but not working
i: yeah it is
