The Unsustainable Green Transition | Simon Michaux – apr 2023 – 91 min video – [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwmygkdoGgc]:

simon michaux

Our fossil-fuelled economy is destabilising the planet. But a renewable economy might not be much better. Simon Michaux and his team at the Geological Survey of Finland have been researching how much minerals and materials we have on earth to build our renewable energy. They’ve found that we simply do not have enough—and mining for those materials would bears a huge environmental cost. On this episode, Simon walks us through the research, the possible outcomes from calculated energy contraction to collapse, what policymakers are doing with this information, and how the geopolitics of the US-China proxy war could make the green transition impossible for the West.

notes/quotes:

5 min – even if had materials.. don’t have time/money

so .. need to try something legit diff.. that gets us back to graeber stop at enough law et al

6 min – series of blind spots as a culture.. 1\ we tend to believe our own bs.. esp at policy making level

part of bs is thinking we need to do policy ness

basic problem is last 50 yrs we’ve used ideology to solve all our problems.. ie: balance budget print more money.. have become untethered from reality .. as virtual fin world is where we believe reality is..

since forever though.. not just 50 years.. always been in sea world.. black science of people/whales law

8 min – tech develops in 2-4 yrs.. but commodity sector takes 20 yrs to open a single mine.. science of mining hasn’t changed..

to me.. makes no diff.. if not yet developing tech we need..

mufleh humanity lawwe have seen advances in every aspect of our lives except our humanity– Luma Mufleh et al

10 min – gold ring has 3 tons waste.. minerals themselves leaving energy in grinding..

13 min – mining system at moment dependent on fossil fuels

23 min – no one has been able to refute my work.. one gray area – storage buffer.. in finland.. look at facts.. and dept of energy of america.. wind/solar are under performing

imagine if we end up needing less (just doing our days differently w no commuting ness.. no/less shipping ness).. and/or 8b people working on whatever unorthodox ways to live diff

44 min – instead of one grid.. could we have several

1:01 – us dollar system cannibalizing europe..

1:07 – swed econ.. circular econ solutions.. redesigned as resource balanced econ.. *try to understand boundary conditions of future and where we put our efforts.. instead of trying to prevent a problem..

michaux diff via unorthodox law:

**work on solution set and that will override everything else.. where are things likely to work

*another great energy save – letting go of irrelevant s/cancerous distractions

**huge.. ie: a nother way

1:12 – more recycling/repurposing.. transport sector biggest feat

1:15 – more on waste: for every bushel of wheat .8 of cubic meter becomes sterilized.. 40% of land deteriorated.. gotten away with it by being more efficient on that land.. acidifying oceans.. whole food system at moment is the problem.. go to many smale scale organic operations.. permaculture.. it will result in a community that will be deeply unhappy because told they will have less

ie: a sabbatical ish transition

1:20 – 4 paradigms of future: 1\ it will be fine.. someone will think of something.. not that bad.. keep existing et al 2\ vikings/pirates – realize wheels are falling off.. but instead of hard work take from others.. the raiders.. but then no more stuff to take 3\ understand normal systems not doing well.. step up and take care of business to make sure needs are paid attention to.. food, power, et al 4\ arcadians: look 100 yrs in future – how to build new/wise society.. so that sustainable/harmonious.. et al.. social contract in all its forms.. what does tech look like.. this group is like the venus project.. but a lot so far haven’t looked at shortages..

so what happens if handed disruptive tech.. that takes care of shortage

yeah that.. there’s a legit use of tech (nonjudgmental exponential labeling) to facil the seeming chaos of a global detox leap/dance.. the unconditional part of left-to-own-devices ness.. for (blank)’s sake.. and we’re missing it ie: a sabbatical ish transition

1:25 – [simplicity of culture w complexity of tech].. so focus goes from tech we depend upon to we become strongest link in chain.. becomes more local.. waste.. schools.. that’s all we need

imagine if we listened to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & used that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness)

1:28 – a wiser society where reality imposes on us everyday.. diff is how you see the people around you

thurman interconnectedness lawwhen you understand interconnectedness it makes you more afraid of hating than of dying – Robert Thurman
