This is from Chris Smaje’s review of Luke Kemp’s Goliath’s Curse: The History and Future of Societal Collapse.
@davidgraeber understood it better than James Scott. Smaje’s point is that overthrowing a ruler is not enough: we need alternative structures that prevent power from hardening into oppressive hierarchies.
findings (aka: the things i can’t unsee) from on the ground ness deep dive and why we need tech w/o judgment
ie: the dance won’t dance unless/until it’s 1\ all of us 2\ legit free
nothing to date (ever since that day) has gotten to that root of problem
legit freedom will only happen if it’s all of us.. and in order to be all of us.. has to be sans any form of measuring, accounting, people telling other people what to do
that’s our legit structureless structure ness
But @davidgraeber and Sahlins’s On Kings adds more: power is sustained not only by institutions and coercion, but also by myth, ritual and religious ideas. Often apparently egalitarian societies may imagine a hierarchical cosmos.
