series in psalms – as ways to understand how to deal with our feelings.. a gospel 3rd way.. 1\ don’t stuff emotions 2\ don’t worship emotions but 3\ process our feelings in presence of living god

this week – praying our fears

i jn 4:18 = no fear in love – the most common command in scripture.. do not fear

no fear ness

so how to come to ps 3 where david is praying out his fears in presence of god

how do we process that feeling of fear..

if you’re like me.. have so many fears thru out week

most ongoing fear ness

does that mean we don’t love god enough.. that he doesn’t love us enough?

david approaches fears in terrifying and beautiful way

psalms – hymnal of israel.. in 5 books.. just like gedes worked on hymnals and picked each place.. this is arranged in same way

so ps 1&2 is way to understand self and god respectively

so ps 3 first psalm.. the first prayer

commentator: ‘v3 is the gateway to what it means to pray in presence of god’

ps 3 – david showing us with one of toughest emotions – fear

selah – vv 4, 8.. to pause and meditate on what is just said.. so i love it when format for sermon is already there.. where pauses should be.. after 4 and after 8

1\ ps 3:1-2 – david’s emotion – he’s scared.. then .. pause

started w david feeling so good about himself till he sees bathsheeba and he lusts after her.. worst thing he has done in his life.. and sorrows begin ongoingly..

v2 – there is no help for him in god.. coup is working because people are seeing a repeat in history ie: saul.. looked up to him then committed sin.. saul ended up dead.. so clear that the lord has also removed spirit from david (like saul)

fear creeps into david’s heart

diff of fear and anxiety.. not that separated in scripture.. but what might understand what’s going on more.. rolla may, the meaning of anxiety: ‘fear is a reaction to a specific danger to which the individual can make a specific adjustment. but what characterizes anxiety is the feeling of diffuseness and uncertainty and the experience of helplessness toward the threat’

fear is feeling car is coming toward you and need to get out of way.. anxiety is feeling that all day..

david’s good fear – get out or they’ll kill him.. anxiety is – has god left me

the selah is that we sit in that fear for a second.. it’s real and it’s there

2\ ps 3:3-4 – you are my protector – his truth

this is where the change happens from scared to truth that he’s reminding himself of .. i know i’m going to be protected.. i am trying

book by 16th cent monk – dark night of the soul.. don’t know that i would recommend it.. the first 2 ch’s and it’s premise are good.. but pretty hard to follow.. it’s this beautiful/terrifying idea tha st john writes about.. the dark night of the soul.. as this gift from god.. feeling empty.. nothing works.. can’t see god..

dark night of soul ness

nietzsche love fate law: ‘love your fate.. (whatever happens say) this is what i need’ – friedrich nietzsche

this shield is protection but doesn’t mean we’re going to avoid hardship/suffering.. result of following christ in this world

but st john says: this dark night actually rewires/purges our affections/passions.. that we might delight and enter into a richer/fuller communion with god

god longs for intimate love with us.. for this reason st john writes of this dark night of the soul.. that can free us

this ties into this gospel 3rd way.. seems st john is arguing only way to find 3rd way is to experience the dark night of the soul.. that the dark night protects us from worshipping emotions

these emotions are not god but messengers from god that speak to us

st john: there is no other way .. than for god to remove them altogether..

this is god’s way of rewiring our taste buds when we experience fear/darkness/hopelessness.. that’s only we experience death of who god really is and how deeply he loves us.. that we might taste of him more fully.. he is purging/annihilating/emptying

oh my.. the resonations: pepper et al, walking et al, no swim every day et al, can leave things undone et al,.. all the rewires

st john gets to this pt: in addition (to all that purging ness).. god also adds something into our soul.. his love.. he powerfully invades us when we persevere .. if we remain still listening to his voice god will insert something of himself into our character that will mark the rest of our journey with him

that’s the hope he offers.. not just fear.. perfect love casts out fear

j j heller song: god is still here.. what if world doesn’t end when fears come true.. what if we have what we need to make it thru.. what if god is still here in this desert too.. though i never ask for it.. the desert is god’s gift to me

in book of corinthians.. paul says grace of god is sufficient.. not more than we need… always just enough.. reminds us that we desperately need god

how does david know that god sees him and lifts his head.. he knows he’s sinned.. not because of david’s merit.. he knows that is who god is..

the most common phrase throughout all the psalms: the steadfast love of the lord endures forever

ps 136 – every verse is his steadfast love..

do you believe that despite sin/hurt/sorry/doubts.. that steadfast love of lord endures thru it all?.. it does..

that would be a good place for david to stop: i was scared but you were there.. but david doesn’t stop there

3\ ps 3: 5-8 – you are (also) my victor – hope.. at my side.. all the time.. therefore i don’t have to fear.. v7: break the teeth of my enemies.. and it’s like david you can’t pray that.. how can he say that.. when his enemy is his own son.. how can david say that.. when he knows his own story.. that is the reason why david can say that.. he has seen what can happen.. david realizes the lord shattered my teeth..

huge to aligning ness with us & them ness.. and none of us are free ness.. and not slow ness

shatter the teeth: shatter lion’s teeth and can’t eat you anymore..

ps 148:7 – even the sea creature will praise you

so me this is about problem deep enough ness.. that each soul already craves

i would say that if we’re not praying this.. if we’re not praying.. shatter the teeth of my enemies.. we’re missing something.. if we’re not praying for the downfall of the wicked.. 1\ we’re going to feel like sin is ok 2\ we’re going to grow weary in doing good.. if we don’t understand god will overcome all evil.. that the sea creature itself is going to praise god.. we don’t have an understanding of how powerful/loving god is

to me.. this is pearson unconditional law ness et al..

ro 12 – vengeance is mine.. but passage it’s quoting is deut 32: 34-35 – vengeance belongs to me..

in midst of our fear/sickness that is hurting us/others.. we have to know god is going to overcome it all one day.. doesn’t mean praying against people.. but for the downfall of wickedness.. lord crush the wickedness.. crush his teeth.. show him it’s the wrong way as you showed me..

one commentator derek kidner puts it like this.. refuge/protection is not enough.. attests the basic humility behind it.. recognizes w/o lord no solution/hope.. our hope is that the sea creature will praise him

he ends with this: may your blessing be on your people.. the lord’s love endures forever.. do you believe that..
