intro’d to Toni here – tedx east end – london – The laws that sex workers really want
3 min – why 4 approaches don’t work
1\ criminatlization – fear of getting arrested.. but if need to feed family.. then hard to get a job if criminal record.. et al
4 min
2\ partial criminalization – buying selling are legal.. surrounding activities.. bad.. we don’t mind you selling sex.. as long as behind closed doors or all alone..
5 min – the knowledge that we were breaking the law (2 or more considered a brothel) – empowered that man to threaten us
how to pay fine w/o going out to the streets.. it was the need for money that got you selling sex in the first place..
money less ness.. a nother way.. for (blank)’s sake…
6 min –
3\ swedish/nordic.. only criminalize buying.. but hasn’t worked in sweden.. forces to lower prices or be more risky.. gives oxygen to potential abusive third parties… if y ou need that money.. you need to protect your clients from the police
7 min
4\ legalization – netherlands, germany, nevada.. not a great model for human rights.. can only happen in certain areas… certain B.. regulation expensive/difficult to apply with.. back door criminalization.. rich connected can abide.. but marginalized can’t.. not helpful for most vulnerable..
10 min – these laws have political support precisely because they target people that voters don’t want to see or know about
12 min – if people were allowed to migrate legally.. problems arise from criminalization.. if you try to prohibit something people want/need to do.. create more problems than solved..
chasing the scream – Johann et al
you can’t legislate a better world into existence..
14 min – people hung up on .. would you want your daughter doing it.. wrong question.. what if she was doing it.. would she be safe..
15 min – decriminalization – new zealand – worked out w sex workers – red umbrella
make space for us in your movements.. resist those who silence us
16 min – this distinction between victim and empowered is imaginary
there’s really no such thing as the ‘voiceless’. there are only the deliberately silenced, or the preferably unheard. – Arundhati Roy
17 min – sex workers are real people…
all of us ness
we want full decriminalization and labor rights as workers..
