first intro’d to Mike as he worked with/created the work + play = freespace.. a summer/short term idea.. that hopefully is going to just keep growing. love the city as school resonance..

Mike Zuckerman, the director of sustainability for the Zen Compound, secured a $1 monthlong lease for June in the warehouse-like space, with a little help from ReAllocate and the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development.
he explains [freespace]:
It’s a way to explain the Burning Man spirit of innovation to people who have never experienced it in person. And in fact, many of the main Freespace organizers come from the Burning Man community.

or the last few months I immersed myself in the refugee crisis in Greece trying to understand it and see what we could do to provide spaces suitable for people to live with dignity. It’s been the most harrowing project of my life and I’ve met many genuine heroes along the way.
I wanted to wait until I truly felt that we had accomplished something to change the broken system before broadcasting about our efforts. I’m honored to announce that we have opened our space, Elpída Home – a new approach to housing migrants. Here is the 1st article about it. You will be hearing a lot more from me about it and I’ll be asking for your participation.

The idea behind Elpida is that refugees self-organize their stay and make the center their home

fb post sept 2017
Hey Facebooklandia – I have another experiment I’d like to try because the last one went so well.
This is Nakivale Refugee Camp – 170,000 people from 12 nations that has been here for 59 years. I’ve been here 4 times in the last year is my favorite city in Africa.
tl;dr – I’m looking to raise $3k in the next 48 hours for an epic trip to a Uganda on Tuesday to a refugee camp with 2 bad asses.
———-
It has been my dream for a few months to bring these two people with me to Uganda for them to see it with their own eyes and get their genius input to come up with practical actionable solutions. Actually there are about 20 individuals I’d love to bring, but wanted to start with these two and I’d like to leave on this Tuesday… yeah 4 days from now! So yeah, lets see what is possible.
Lance Coleman is a genius – he is a music producer/performer and entrepreneur who is currently running a tiny home community in Oakland. I know him from his fellowship at Institute for the Future and his work at Zoo Labs. He will be bringing a studio in a box with him. And to top it of, this will be his 1st trip to Africa, it is always life changing.
Alex Alden – is one of the world experts on Blockchain for International Aid / Refugees and a friend of mine since the Temple Nightclub days. Here is an article from a few days ago about her work – https://www.fastcompany.com/…/how-blockchain-could-transfor…
imagine.. rather than use blockchain to facil transactions.. use it to facil curiosity..

I’ve been doing projects in Uganda since 2010 and after many years of research and prototyping I’m ready to go big. I truly believe in the potential to not only help many people there but also help redesign societal infrastructure to be able to take that back to the so called developed world. I have partnered with Habitas RISE to build out an amazing public space in a refugee camp with the refugee collective Opportunigeethat you will be hearing a lot about over the next few months.
Thank you and looking forward to making magic happen and sharing this journey with you all.

fb share (dec 2017) – on rohingya people
I’ve spent the last few weeks in Bangladesh trying to comprehend the largest humanitarian crisis outside of war zones right now. Over 600,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar and come here to Cox Bazaar in the last 3 months. No one has ever seen anything matching the scale, density and speed at which these mega refugee camps formed.

This week in Dallas (video from 2016) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=aCxRRmGgj4I]
3 min – american aid 25 bn a year.. what we pay to fix our mistakes.. not much has changed.. %’s down but numbers not changed
5 min – me.. the aid worker.. i look at you as numbers.. ie: how much food entitled to.. that’s what we do when we try to excuse ourselves..
7 min – video.. ie’s of how it should not be..
8 min – what we did.. set up a community in months.. instead of years..
9 min – what i found in georgia – people rebelling against what we thought was the right way to help people.. the numbers.. ie: 5 people to tent.. we had forgotten that they actually have human dna.. they’re people.. also aware there’s something else in the world..
11 min – they stole all the stuff.. ie: not happy w tents in rows.. built own toilets/kitchens.. redid electricity.. the place changed into a living space.. away from what we had designed as a storage facility.. what modern people all want.. to have space.. and access..
12 min – once we understood they wanted to shape their own lives.. to live like any one else.. that we were wanting the same thing.. no more fighting..
13 min – they wanted to learn/access knowledge thru the net.. that was the problem
16 min – people had cash to buy the things they actually wanted..
why not go have/need ness.. sans money
17 min – another video – camp in jordan – set up in 2012-13
22 min – bring people considered a liability to work
23 min – 15 yrs to rid poverty.. big.. better get going.. to another way
a nother way [aka: not part\ial.. for (blank)’s sake…]
24 min – how do we share the knowledge affectively
27 min – we can do it.. but requires us to complete change our paradigm
