The Power of Networks
Published on May 21, 2012
In this new RSA Animate, Manuel Lima, senior UX design lead at Microsoft Bing, explores the power of network visualisation to help navigate our complex modern world. Taken from a lecture given by Manuel Lima as part of the RSA’s free public events programme. Listen to the full talk: http://www.thersa.org/events/audio-an…

3 stages of modern science (x-d glasses ness):
problems of simplicity (17/18/19th cents)
problems of disorganized complexity (1st half of 20th cent)
problems of organized complexity (last half of 20th cent & current)
organizing complexity
trees are unable to suffice.. highly interconnectedness
full talk:
inherent appeal toward fractals..
been used to – beauty in simplicity/balance.. networks almost opposite of that..
an alternative perception of beauty – when we look at things/art – we always try to see something/pattern.. maybe that’s not the point.. sometimes it’s that lack of simplicity that’s fascinating in its own right
order and disorder being the same thing – (chaordic ness) – orderly complex – if you zoom into the network, complexity arises from multiple/duplicated simplicities… evolution based on a lot of small changes.. art has been reluctant to embrace that order of disorder
and so perhaps.. in getting at our interconnectedness.. we better facilitate things such as coincidence of wants.. helping us to dance toward betterness..

Manuel is founder of visual complexity:
Functional visualizations are more than innovative statistical analyses and computational algorithms. They must make sense to the user and require a visual language system that uses colour, shape, line, hierarchy and composition to communicate clearly and appropriately, much like the alphabetic and character-based languages used worldwide between humans.
