cheating? survival?
From the page of a be you book above, taking a look in particular at Denise Pope‘s research at Stanford. Not long ago, we thought 75% was too high to be real.
So what’s happening today? Where are our morals going?
Plenty of research/evidence of teachers/admin/schools cheating as well. [Now we’re adding to the high cost of high stake tests, cost for more security. So, how much is enough?]
We also have plenty of research on what the stress of the institution of school/obedience is doing to people. Many are starting to keep their kids out of school, due to anxiety/illness. Some investigative parents are saying that 75% of the client base for tutors are kids with anxiety.
Suicide is on the rise.
amazing.
We all start out knowing magic. We are born with whirlwinds, forest fires, and comets inside us. We are born able to sing to birds and read the clouds and see our destiny in grains of sand. But then we get the magic educated right out of our souls.” ~ Robert R. McCammon
The requirement that a child go to school for about 6 hours a day, 180 days a year, for about 10 years, whether or not he learns anything there, whether or not he already knows it or could learn it faster or better somewhere else, is such a gross violation of civil liberties that few adults would stand for it. But the child who resists is treated as a criminal. – John Holt

cheating/survival.. either way..killing us.. post from Peter Gray:

WHAT A SHOCK that was to me. I can’t say that I really liked Henry; his ambition was such that he rubbed those who were beneath him, including me, the wrong way. But I knew him and felt I understood him. He was a real flesh and blood person to me, and when I heard of his suicide I cried. I could see him as a frail person–despite his burly physique and blustering style–caught up in a drive toward self-advancement, in a lab that was rewarding the “right” findings and had little interest in the “wrong” ones.

old power values.. came from a world w clear boundaries between ‘us’ and ‘them’.. where only the lab coated and credentialed were equipped to solve the mysteries of the cosmos.. as one leading scientist explained, the resistance to open innovation ‘is really intrinsic, the history of the scientific method goes against it.. in our training trying to solve problems in the scientific method was: i take in all this info, i synthesise it, i do analysis, and i come to some conclusion and so to reach out to other people to solve it, it’s like cheating’
scientific method and cheating
