first intro here – 2012 ted:

Texting that saves lives

texting might be able to save more lives than penicillin..

avg kid sends 4000 text messages a month.. texting has a 100% open rate

texting 11 times more effective than email

this isn’t what we do.. we do social change.. but kids were sending us all these messages..

i’m not comfortable just helping with referrals.. i want to prevent this from happening..

a nother way. leapfrog to global do over.

tech – rather than fb mining friend from 3rd grade, or target telling me what to buy, or manager what player to buy…

_______

adding page here – 2015 tedwomen:

The heartbreaking text that inspired a crisis help line

worst message – are you there.. we had to quit triaging this.. and had to build a crisis text line for these people in pain – in 4 months in all 295 area codes in america… 0 marketing..

text is unbelievably private… so we spike at lunch time..

we just get facts… ie: i want to die. i have a bottle of pills.

30% of our messages are about suicide and depression… strangers helping strangers… more than 6.5 mill messages in less than 2 yrs

the data – makes us more accurate

the day robin williams died.. spikes in crisis hot lines, avg 3 hr wait.. but we code orange to order rather than chronological for calls..

data also making world better.. messages auto tagging… finding out worst days/times/places for things…

we’ve made this public: crisis trends dot org

i’m inspired by..  using tech/data to help that girl..

perhaps preventative.. self-talk as data – as the day.
