Our values only matter when we’re willing to extend it to people we don’t like.

i believe in human rights.. freedom of expression.. dignity.. compassion.. i have this sort of laundry list of values that are really important to me.. but what’s also important to me.. what i’ve learned to practice thru the films that i make.. what the films and the nazis and the jihadis .. what they have taught me.. is my values mean nothing if i only want to extend it to all of you because i like you and because most of us probably agree on many core issues .. my values only matter when i’m willing to extend it to people i don’t like.. to people i don’t agree with.. in fact to people i dislike.. i think that’s the key.. i think if we don’t do that then the gaps between us will deepen.. the misunderstandings and the polarisation and the dehumanising of ourselves and each other will continue.. and i am not prepared to do that.. i’m not prepared to stand for that.. i’m not prepared to practice that.. i realize that a lot of our politics often tends to head in that direction but i’m not willing to contribute to that.. so the only way we can disrupt that is thru more humanness
