dan pallota – charity

intro’d to Dan via his ted:

people are weary of being asked to do the least they can do

The next time you’re looking at a charity, don’t ask about the rate of their overhead. Ask about the scale of their dreams.

Activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend — not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). In this bold talk, he says: Let’s change the way we think about changing the world.

Everything the donating public has been taught about giving is dysfunctional, says AIDS Ride founder Dan Pallotta. He aims to transform the way society thinks about charity and giving and change

I’ve been calling it the humanitarian sector. But as an ad man, we’ve been coming up with some really great ads for the Charity Defense Council that we will start running as soon as we get budget money. One has a person looking directly into the camera and the headline says, “I’m overhead.” We’ve dehumanized overhead. Let’s humanize it. This person will say, “My mother died of breast cancer, and I’m fund-raising for the breast cancer coalition. Without me, there is no cause. I’m 100 percent committed to the end of breast cancer and I’m overhead.”

ted 2016 – the dream we haven’t dared to dream

ability for tech for communication has gone vertical.. while ability to listen/understand gone nowhere

our access to info through the roof.. access to joy grounded..

to fulfill our potential for doing we have to surrender our profound potential for being..

transistors on circuit can be doubled and doubled.. but our capacity for compassion/humanity..serenity and love are somehow limited…

6 min – i’m not even talking about mindfulness…. mindfulness is all of a sudden becoming a tool for improving productivity...i’m talking about dreaming.. as boldly as the dimension of our being.. as we do about industry and tech… an audacious authenticity.. that allows us to cry w one another.. a heroic humility that allows us to remove our masks and be real… our inability to be w one another our fear of crying together that gives rise to many of problems we are frantically trying to solve…

7 min – an epic be.. a new epic – in which we become as excited/curious/scientific  about the development of our humanity as we are the development of our tech

7 min – we are now very comfortable imagining unimaginable tech achievement.. in  2016 – it is the dimension of our being itself that cries out for its fair share of imagination..

we’re all here to dream… but each of us chasing our own dream… looking through each other’s humanity.. can’t be bothered.. have idea for saving the world…

9 min – what if we experimented with creating that kind of world – human. kind. be both….

ted – tend to each other’s dreams
