To conclude our long-lasting reading group on Debt: the First 5,000 Years, we invited Barry Gills for the second and final meeting of Debt in Discussion.
Barry K Gills is Professor of Development Studies, University of Helsinki, Finland and founding Editor and Editor in Chief of Globalizations journal and the Rethinking Globalizations book series (Routledge). He is also a founding member of the Extractivisms and Alternatives Initiative (ExAlt) and the Peoples Sovereignty Network.
Extractivism is the removal of natural resources particularly for export with minimal processing.
from exhalt site [https://www.helsinki.fi/en/conferences/exalt-2022]:
Our focus is on natural-resource politics, although we are actively engaged in discussions of further applications of the concept beyond the traditional areas of natural resource extraction. EXALT offers critical social-scientific analyses of extractivism as one of the most problematic issues of our time and of key importance for managing pressing global problems.
actually there is a deeper problem.. deep enough to get to the root of all the problems..
need 1st/most: means to undo our hierarchical listening to self/others/nature as global detox/re\set.. so we can org around legit needs
googled him and so now taking in parts of this 1 hr video – The Hexham Debates – Prof Barry Gillis – Climate Action After COP 27 – apr 2023 – [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPWc329ASik]:
27 min – how many assemblies.. what kind.. what kind of society are we going to build..
need: infinitesimal structures approaching the limit of structureless\ness and/or vice versa .. aka: ginorm/small ness
ie: imagine if we listened to the itch-in-8b-souls 1st thing everyday & used that data to connect us (tech as it could be.. ai as augmenting interconnectedness as nonjudgmental expo labeling)
28 min – we need to seriously discuss our theory of social change.. not just theory of change.. and not a kind of default theory of change which means you’re always pleading w the govt to do something better.. but your whole theory of social change..t who are the power platers/actors.. what are the nature of power.. what are the leverage points.. on and on it goes..
again.. need 1st/most: means to undo our hierarchical listening to self/others/nature so we can org around legit needs
29 min – you see all of this as a long term process.. the rest of our lives.. this is a long term problem and we all will be involved for the rest of our lives in sorting this out.. it’s inescapable.. no way to hide.. we have to just accept it..
oi.. takes a lot of work.. as cancerous distraction
today we have the means for a global leap.. a global detox leap.. for (blank)’s sake.. and we’re missing it
karl polyani’s the great transformation: ‘trying to understand failure.. rise of fascism/militarism.. caused by a marketization of society.. huge change.. for rest of lives.. have to engage’
