tedglobal 2014 – What the Social Progress Index can reveal about your country

p. 7 – the welfare of a nation can therefore scarcely be inferred from a measurement of national income as defined above..

same song second verse .. no? so many denouncing the thing the invented for being used the way it’s used.. yet they permeate society, ie: iq guy, sat guy, dsm guy,…

gdp is not a measure of our well-being – it’s just a measure of our economic performance…

our societies have become engines to create more gdps… it’s counts prisons as success…

we’re ready for an economic revolution…

or – an economical irrelevancy.. no?

social progress index

1\ access to necessities

2\ access to building blocks

3\ access to opportunity

ie: measurement of discrimination is by if laws are passed.. but if by people feel discriminated against..

shows…gdp is not progress

talking as necessities – what really matters to real people the world over –  ie: water, life w/o fear, education –

What Does A Successful Country Look Like?

The Social Progress Imperative’s mission is to improve the quality of lives of people around the world, particularly the least well off, by advancing global social progress. The Social Progress Index provides a robust, holistic and innovative measurement tool to guide countries’ choices to enable greater social progress and foster research and knowledge-sharing on the policies and investments that will best achieve that goal. Social progress is defined as the capacity of a society to meet the basic human needs of its citizens, establish the building blocks that allow citizens and communities to enhance and sustain the quality of their lives, and create the conditions for all individuals to reach their full potential.

so – do we need to measure.. anything..? about us..?

thinking of self-organizing ness – and community and walk while asking.. (madrid) et al

like – what if progress is not a relevant term …

from google progress: forward or onward movement toward a destination.

so what if we have the capabilities now that we can live w/o a destination…

what if we give ourselves a do over .. without that premise..

for example.. in first and second videos above – talking of education then showing school.. sitting in rows… shows basic healthcare..  just seems – school and healthcare aren’t what people really want.. (those are institutions we created that we think we need.. but if we truly lived differently… perhaps we wouldn’t need them)

i don’t know

definitely a good/next step from where we’re at now.. definitely better.. but it seems we’ve lagged a bit – and if we can – should leap frog to betterness. rather than the next step..
