“In this new episode of the Edge City Podcast, we chat with Matt Prewitt from RadicalxChange about rethinking society through intentional experimentation and social technology. The conversation explores various types of intentional communities, including affinity communities, individualist escape communities, and responsible experimenters. Matt highlights how responsible experimentation can create more sustainable and impactful spaces and argues that mutual vulnerability is essential for building trust and shared identity. This is illustrated by RadicalxChange’s use of community currencies like “∈dges” at Edge City’s pop-up villages, an experiment to incentivize local exchange and keeping value circulating in the community. The chat closes with ideas on how such social technologies can cultivate human flourishing by combining global connectedness with robust, locally supportive systems.”

Matt Prewitt: Social Technology, Community Currencies, and RadicalxChange

2 min – rad x change a small non profit.. organizing people who had read book – rad markets ideas by glen wile and eric posner.. ideas in book suggested really rad provocative forms to way we vote, own property/data.. that has set template for rad x change mission since then

rad? provocative? if still voting/owning?

3 min – basically nothing is sacred.. could we do voting better.. could it make more sense..

so is voting sacred? why even do/talk of it if wanting rad ness

4 min – we’re working far up level of change.. we’re definitely thinking about fundamental issues and big changes to society.. so part is inspiring people to think deeply about some basic institutions we might be able to improve

? improve .. or let go of

oi.. skipped to 25 min – the importance of social tech

26 min – when we talk about community .. talking about story/narrative.. they are threatened/fraying.. solving this problem.. sometimes ‘problem’ framing doesn’t leave room for ‘story’ .. techniques to coord don’t show up as tech.. we need to get better at building repairing social fabric, discerning/developing narratives that sustain us

29 min – why i love edge city project and pop up cities.. you are inviting people into a container into which a story can be built.. that then becomes basis of a community that supports people.. if successful.. built w/o deep dependence on historical narratives.. which run into limits.. we need new stories that are based on other things too..

31 min – another layer of it.. horari.. creation of shared stories thru religion et al allows strangers to trust each other.. very fast route to trust.. it’s a social tech.. animals can’t do this the way we can.. one of reasons humans can collab at massive scale..

34 min – diff connective tissue: associative obligations

oi.. obligation ness as cancerous distraction
