Our highly personalized reaction to Robin Williams’s suicide, and our inability to sustain a national conversation about the depression epidemic after his death, provide important clues about why we’ve made so little progress in addressing this problem.

In 1993, before I got engaged, I plunged into a severe depression. My wife Laura talks about the beginning of that period, and about how isolating it can be to support someone who is depressed.

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. – Jiddu Krishnamurti

Most of what you hear about depression is wrong. Think for yourself.

You know it’s bad when you can’t eat a fortune cookie without seeing ads for the pharmaco-industrial complex. (pic of fortune cookie that says – depression is not a choice. it’s a disease.

A blood test for depression = foolish waste of time. If a person doesn’t report any problem with mood, they’re not depressed. Damn the blood

UK: Thousands attempt suicide while on NHS waiting list for psychological help HT

Clinical trials call it success when there is >50 % reduction of depression symptoms. Here’s a better goal: (pic of defn – sophrosyne: a healthy state of mind characterized by self-control, moderation, and a deep awareness of one’s true self, and resulting in true happiness)

Great editorial about our excessive tolerance of suicide. Dead on.
