I think that part of what a culture of domination has done is raise that romantic relationship up as the single most important bond, when of course the single most important bond is that of community. Marriage many years ago was really a communal act.
According to bell hooks, community holds greater importance than a romantic relationship when it comes to learning and practicing love, as she believes that a supportive community provides a wider space to cultivate love and build meaningful connections with others, whereas romantic relationships can often be overly focused on individual fulfillment and can perpetuate hierarchical power dynamics.
