11 min – creation out of imperfection.. where language came from.. desire to come out of isolation and have some sort of connection with one another.. had to be easy when simple survival..ie: water.. tiger.. but when it gets really interesting… when we use that same system of symbols to communicate all the abstract and intangible things..that we’re experiencing.. what is.. frustration.. or anger.. or love.. when i say love.. the sound comes out of my mouth.. hits other person’s ear.. travels through bizantine conduit in brain. .. thru memories of love.. or lack of love.. and they register what i’m saying and they say they understand.. but how do i know they understand.. because words are inert..they’re just symbols.. they’re dead.. and so much of our experience is intangible.. so much of what we perceive cannot be expressed.. it’s unspeakable.. and when we communicate with one another and we feel we’ve connected.. that we’re understood.. i think we have an almost spiritual communion and that feeling might be transient.. but i think it’s what we live for..

59 min – (4 guys walking): if the world that we are forced to accept is false and nothing is true.. then everything is possible.. on the way to discovering what we love we will find everything we hate everything that blocks our path from our desire.. comfort will never be comfortable for those who seek what is not on the market.. systematic questioning of the idea of happiness… to confront the familiar society is a fraud so complete/venal that it demands to be destroyed beyond the power of memory to recall life’s existence.. to interupt the continuum of everyday experience and all the normal expectations that go with it.. to live as if something actually depended on one’s actions.. to rupture the spell of the ideology of a commodified consumer society so that our repressed desires have a more authentic nature and come forward.. to demonstrate the contrast between what life presently is and what it could be.. to immerse ourselves in the oblivion of actions and know we’re making it happen..there will be an intensity never before known in everyday life to exchange love/hate life/death terror/redemption repulsions/attractions.. affirmation of freedom so reckless and unqualified that it amounts to total denial in every kind of restraint and limitation

1:08 – i can’t remember.. but that’s beside the point whether i can dredge up this info about my address or my mom’s maiden name… or what not.. i’ve got the benefit in this reality.. if you want to call that.. of a consistent perspective…. mostly just me dealing with a lot of people.. who are exposing me to info/ideas that seem vaguely familiar but at the same time it’s all very alien to me.. i’m not in an objective rational world.. like i have been flying around.. it’s weird too because it’s not like a fixed state.. it’s more like this whole spectrum of awareness.. like the lucidity waivers or like.. right now i know i’m dreaming.. and we’re even talking about it.. this is the most in my self/thoughts that i’ve been so far.. i’m talking about being in a dream.. but i’m beginning to think that it’s something that i really don’t have any precedent for.. it’s totally unique.. the quality of the environment and the info that i’ve receiving.. like your soap opera for ie.. that’s a really cool idea.. i didn’t come up with that.. it’s like something outside of myself.. like something transmitted to me externally.. i don’t know what this is…
1:10 – (girl): we seem to think we’re so limited by the world and the confines.. but we’re really just creating them.. you keep trying to figure it out but it seems like now that you know that what you’re doing is dreaming you can do whatever you want to .. you’re dreaming but you’re awake.. you have so many options and that’s what life is about…
i understand what you’re saying.. it’s up to me.. i’m the dreamer.. it’s weird.. so much of the info that these people have been imparting to me.. it’s got this really.. heavy connotation to it.. sometimes i feel kind of isolated.. but most of the time i feel really connected/engaged in this active process.. which is kind of weird because most of the time i’ve just been really passive and not really responding.. well.. except for now i guess… i was just kind of letting the info wash over me

1:13 – an assumption develops that you cannot understand life and live life simultaneously .. i do not agree entirely.. i would say.. that life understood is life lived.. but.. the paradoxes bug me.. and i can learn to love.. and make love.. to the paradoxes that bug me.. and on really romantic evenings of self.. i go salsa dancing with my confusion.. as one person realizes they are a dream figure in someone else’s dream.. that is self awareness..

Waking Life is a 2001 American adult animated docufiction/drama film, directed by Richard Linklater. Distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures, it is the first (and currently only) animated film released by Fox Searchlight Pictures. The film explores a wide range of philosophical issues including the nature of reality, dreams, consciousness, the meaning of life, free will, and existentialism. Waking Life is centered on a young man who wanders through a succession of dream-like realities wherein he encounters a series of individuals who willingly engage in insightful philosophical discussions.
The film was entirely rotoscoped, although it was shot using digital video of live actors with a team of artists drawing stylized lines and colors over each frame with computers, rather than being filmed and traced onto cells on a light box. The film contains several parallels to Linklater’s 1991 film Slacker. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy reprise their characters from Before Sunrise in one scene. Waking Life premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival.
Waking Life is about an unnamed young man living an ethereal existence that lacks transitions between everyday events and that eventually progresses toward an existential crisis. For most of the film he observes quietly but later participates actively in philosophical discussions involving other characters—ranging from quirky scholars and artists to everyday restaurant-goers and friends—about such issues as metaphysics, free will, social philosophy, and the meaning of life. Other scenes do not even include the protagonist’s presence, but rather, focus on a random isolated person, group of people, or couple engaging in such topics from a disembodied perspective. Along the way, the film touches also upon existentialism, situationistpolitics, posthumanity, the film theory of André Bazin, and lucid dreaming, and makes references to various celebrated intellectual and literary figures by name
The film was mostly produced using Rotoshop, a custom-made rotoscoping program that creates blends between keyframe vector shapes, which also makes use of virtual “layers”, and created specifically for the production by Bob Sabiston
