When I first came to the Media Lab I was warned not to talk about sports around Marvin Minsky, who thought that most people who liked sports weren’t very bright. I didn’t agree with that, but I really don’t care much about any specific sports anyway: what I like is just that there are rituals that draw millions of people into sync, and football seems innocent and interesting enough. As rituals go.

So I am grateful that the game is drawing up from the deep well of tragedy and making clear what is actually happening. I don’t know who Richard Sherman is, but I know the names of the men who were killed this week, and until those names have wider notoriety than any athlete, I hope these kinds of engagements intensify.

These kinds of culture should reflect the world we live in, not some easy escape from it. And the world we live in, at moment, is intolerable.
