lupita nyong’o

lupita bw

heard about her via 12 years slave, by Steve McQueen.. but fell in love with her here (via upworthy):

on beauty

my complexion had always been an obstacle to overcome and all of a sudden it wasn’t.. it was perplexing.. and i wanted to reject it.. because i had begun to enjoy the seduction of inadequacy

to the beholders that i thought mattered.. i still felt unbeautiful

my mother told me..

..you can’t eat beauty..

..it doesn’t feed you.

beauty is not a thing i can acquire or consume..

..it’s something i just have to be.

my mother – you can’t rely on how you look to sustain you..

what fundamentally sustains us is compassion..

that kind of beauty inflames the heart and enchants the soul

feel the validation of your external beauty.. but also..

..get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside..

..there is no shade in that beauty
