institution of conformity
What was most striking to me was the fact that the questioning of primary education hasn’t occurred to me at all previous to Foucalt. Even then I was somewhat skeptical. It is the combination of social indoctrination and disciplinary normalization; modern universal education is a phenomenon that arose over the past century that has become one of the most fundamental ideas in the world. People who question such a vital pillar of society are discredited as conspiracy theorists, or radicals who despise normality. And it is too easy to justify the concept of schooling with normal psychological biases; it is such an enormous part of everyday life, and it is ubiquitous, it must have become this way because of the benefits it brings to those that undergo such education.
