Hello Freemont County!

While I’ve had a chance to meet a good number of you I’d like to take a chance to introduce myself and our work at Communal to everyone in Fremont County. We have launched here in beautiful Canon City and are incredibly excited about what’s ahead this summer. We’re one week out from our first Communal’s Farmer’s Market & Gathering so I’m probably a bit overdue with this introduction. I’ll begin with how wonderful it has been to meet so many beautiful and community-minded spirits in my brief time here (I moved to Canon in December of last year; my family has been here for 7 years). There’s so much more to this town than can be revealed in visits to see family and I’ve decided to make a home here for myself and my ten-year-old daughter Nina Bella.

It’s my feeling that this city has a chance to be something incredible, for everyone who calls Fremont County home as well as the travelers far and wide who pass through on their weekends. In that spirit, we’re ramping up with a relandscape and remodel of the old laundromat property on 9th street (our signs for the market should be up this weekend). Our goal is to make a market and gathering place that can become a hub for everyone to count on for something to do on their weekends (if we’re lucky, weeknights too) and connect our local producers and consumers in such a way that we become more than a group of people who share a zip-code, but become the community we all crave.

Our work and ideas have already made headlines for Canon City in Forbes and with a mutual come-together attitude and spirit I know we can throw one hell of an event week in and week out. Something that we can all be proud of. It’ll probably be a little roughshod at first, but we plan to improve with feedback and suggestions each week to arrive at the best destination for everyone involved. This is something we wish to facilitate on behalf of the community. All of us at Communal aim to do the best we can to make that happen.

As we’ve shared with local organizations like the Canon City Co-op team and the Chamber Alliance here around the corner from our office, we are available anytime to answer any questions you might have. Feel free to come by our 5th St. office in downtown Canon City, or you can email me directly at toma@common.place. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

We’re working our tails off this coming week to shore up remaining vendor slots, landscaping, and remodeling to accommodate live music and food trucks. We’re on the clock but we’re committed to creating something that leaves everyone who joins in walking away with a great experience for themselves and their families. We hope to see as many of you there with us in one way or another!

Can’t wait to meet and collaborate with you all,

Toma Bedolla, CEO at Communal

As we’re learning how to curate the best possible community experience we can through our weekly Farmer’s Market & Gathering each Saturday, we’re uncovering all the remarkable efforts and love that has been put into this town and surrounding area to make it what it is today.

The Arkansas Riverwalk is absolutely precious. Great river access, long, and well-manicured. The mountain biking and hiking trails from East Wing Trailhead up through Ecology Park are never crowded and well maintained. Tunnel Drive Trail has been extended. Skyline is a great place to take your “scared of heights” friends for a safe but harrowing experience. The Gorge of course. This doesn’t even begin to capture what there is to do here. Skydiving? Check. Helicopter canyon tour? Check? Whitewater rafting? Check.

We haven’t met everyone responsible for maintaining or bringing all of these things to Canyon City but those we have are giants in our eyes and we want to be clear we know we’re standing on their shoulders. A huge tip of the cap from Communal to all of you out there. You know who you are.

We’re also excited about our music lineup these next few weeks…we have Carlos and the Boys playing tomorrow, and Beans and Biscuits (old country and bluegrass) playing on the 17th. Vendors are looking for people to come and patrons are looking for as many vendors as we can hold. We hope to see you all tomorrow for our second swing at our weekly Farmer’s Market & Gathering. We open at 10 AM and run until 3 PM. Music starts at 10:30 AM.

The sooner we get this event where we all want it to be, the sooner we start adding Movie Night and a Food Truck rally during each week. Let’s have some fun this summer Fremont!

so a bit diff than what i originally thought.. oh well
