What do you want to learn at IDEC?
I want to learn about hosting meaningful conversations on learning and education. How can we make the conversations broader and more inclusive, to include not just those interested in alternative education but also policy makers? How can we host conversations in a way that won’t reproduce the same language and ways of thinking about education that are already making it hard to think creatively about new possibilities? What are platforms, tools, media and stories that can help bring a wider array of people into this conversation? And how can we leverage these conversations to bring about real change?
[perhaps a good fit for idea’s new story teller position? – just posted from Dana: Excited to be sharing a call out for a new role, IDEA’s National Storyteller — who will play an essential role in sharing stories of change and shaping a public narrative around powerful learning. Consider applying and please send this to anyone you think would be great for this. Applications due August 15th.http://www.formstack.com/forms/?1532402-buiQPGtrfS]
The other major question I’m bringing with me is around equity and social cohesion. What would be the economics of a more open and flexible “education system”? What would be the economics of a an education non-system? What would be an equitable alternative to standardized education? And how can we approach the challenge of cultural and educational diversity in contexts where there is conflict, ideological extremism and where education is very nationalistic? What are alternatives to state-imposed monoculture?
On a personal note, I’m hoping to gain a better sense of where my place is in all of this work. I also hope to leave with more clarity around how to focus and align my efforts.
What do you want to share at IDEC?
I could offer a workshop on storytelling. I specialize in fibs. I am also open to hosting a conversation on education reform in Egypt after the January 2011 revolution. What matters to you?
I’m passionate about people and about the stories that they tell, about what matters to them, theirs dreams and also their disappointments. It is precisely those stories that drive my work. I am now at a point in my life where I am trying to bring my work into more alignment with my own story, which is proving a lot harder and a lot more exciting than what I had expected.
