Preface to ch 1: Why it’s so huge in comparison? [of 5 elements, 1 is all we need, and anyone can do it today.]
Because scaling the individual is all we need to do. And it’s the simplest, most inexpensive, most sustainable thing to do. Missing that piece, misunderstanding what scaling an individual entails, makes doing all the rest pretty moot. Unless we get this idea down, we will just be spinning our wheels at more tweaking.
Whimsy does matter.
Perhaps it sounds silly. But it’s the vital piece we’ve been missing.
Compulsory learning never sticks to the mind. – Plato

why talk to yourself
In our journey to redefine school, Simon Sinek’s TED talk about the importance of why, got under our skin. Why why first? How seemed awfully huge. As did what. The further we journeyed, however, the louder why became.
The world has been quite obsessed with how school is done, as seen by years of study of pedagogy (method and practice of teaching.) Even our own research to redefine school, as it intensified 3 years ago, was focused on the answer to how because of our presupposed what (certain math, science, etc.)
We found, as might be expected, that everyone learns differently. Nothing is for everyone in the how ie: lecture, hands on, book, video, drill. Most people accept that these days. In fact most money, energy, and resources go toward differentiation of the how. How we get those core standards (the what) into each student. ie: by gaming, tech, project based, blended, flipped, online, charter, homeschool, ib, ap, stem, steam, etc..
Well, imagine if we’re focusing on how to a wrong what. For a very long time now, not many have questioned the what of school. However, questioning the what, changes the game. It allows learning to be per choice, directed by internal curiosities. A person’s or community’s how can then emerge holistically and vulnerably in context. There is no normal when the assessment is a self-assessment. We are all individual thumbprints, indispensable to the whole. Via Godin, we are all weird, abnormal, extraordinary. Imagine, rather than trying to scale any innovation, we scale the individual.

how talk to self
Many already do this. Many more could do this, if they were freed from their current busy-ness and/or bureaucratic restrictions. However, many will most likely need a jump start.
[free people up – -skinny font – like p 25]
We’re hoping detox might act as a temporary template if needed.

But we’re also thinking, initially, we’ll need some manufactured help from technology. Believing that technology does want to help us get back to us, we’re imagining an app – that will:
1. encourage daily talking to self.
2. crowdsource and connect people with similar curiosities, grounding an otherwise inevitable chaos.
3. create and archive, a trail of sorts, of the person’s curiosities, doings, connections. create a brain for the person, a non-linear portfolio.
[- so change pg 23 (take out most of existing) and add p. 24 instead
mary ann quote from p.21 about not complaining – archiving evidences of power of play
some things we’re currently doing to prototype the app, our meanwhile app. pics of signs at anthology.
then maybe add a scenario,
[from dml post]
or a napkin sketch (likeof china) , or top p. 24 – of texting.. and getting matches back..

maybe leave out all of p. 23??

what talking/conversation might matter to everyone – detox?
One of our goals was to remix/capture a user-friendly process of learning that might jump start people back to a natural state of curiosity. We believe people are good, and they don’t need to be micro-managed, they just need to be set free. The idea and name: detox, came out of an acknowledgment of the severity of our current state. Many of us have become indoctrinated by a compulsory curriculum, by mandated learnings. many have become co-dependent on an outside structure, that appears safe and efficient, but most often is leading us toward mindlessness, toward both figurative and literal homelessness. we believe learning is natural and what needs to be learned is learned.
[jake’s tenets of learning]
If you find yourself continually waiting and wanting for instruction, for knowing what to do when you don’t know what to do, wondering if it is legit or legal even, to think for yourself, we’re hoping this process of learning, will help you disrupt yourself, back to your authentic self. imagine finding a way to peel off the toxins that are suffocating us, making many of us both figuratively and literally sick.
Observing without evaluating is the highest form of human intelligence. – Krishnamurti
Self-reflection of anything compulsory is not a move toward breathtaking/betterness. Self-reflect on your gut, on your daily actions, because of your gut. What would happen if we trusted you. – michalski
Self-reflection. It’s not really healthy self-reflection if i’m talking to myself about what you told me to do..
That’s more of a time consumption.
mix in p. 25 with all this?
