Neil‘s response when asked by pentagon how tech could improve defense/safety):

short version – gershenfeld something else law: possibly one of the best/most significant impacts of tech is tech that gives people something else to do – neil gershenfeld

long version – (gershenfeld something else law) neil gershenfeld at 9 (of 11) min talk on edge site: [http://edge.org/conversation/personal-fabrication]:

9 min… on pentagon trying to improve defense:

….possibly one of the best/most significant impacts of tech is not a better weapon to win a war but tech that gives people something else to do.  .. there will always be bad people that want to use best available means to shoot at each other but the roll of tech in giving everybody else something else to do – as a cost benefit trade off – may be one of the best military investments – and the generals got that.. but not clear what office in the pentagon is the office of preventive technology

freeing us – all – up to be usefully/happily preoccupied

something else to do – the best protection/benefit/betterness.. for the entire world.. is for each person to be/become themselves.. perhaps because it’s then we become .. unoffendable

art (by day/light) and sleep (by night/dark) as global re\set.. to fittingness (undisturbed ecosystem)

perhaps we’re clinging to privacy/protection/security/defense et al.. when our protection lies in the seeming chaos.. the order we don’t yet get because it is us emerging.. perhaps we spend our energy\ness …. listening for that…?

the new security is dynamic; it is not based on protection, but on man’s spontaneous activity.. it is the security acquired each moment by man’s spontaneous activity. it is the security that only freedom can give, that needs no illusions because it has eliminated those conditions that necessitate illusions..

local transit should be made ubiquitous and fast, and all local travel on public transit should just be made free, so that the incentives for private transit are shit.
Make it not make sense to do bad things. Even electric cars are not good. Cars are bad for the environment. (http://twitter.com/iwelsh/status/1230101790789599233?s=17)

If we learn anything from these unprecedented and interconnected crises, it should be that war, police and our cruel carceral system do not make us safe. What makes people safe is having a stable climate, a decent place to live, access to medical care and meaningful work.

Now is the time to fundamentally rethink what security means

deeper security than med care and work et al.. fittingness..
