find the bravery to change your mind
From Icarus Deception:
Change Your Mind
Artists fail, and failing means that sometimes you need to change your mind about what you thought the best path might be. That’s one reason that failure is anathema—it means we have to change our minds.
The real problem when working with a consultant, a therapist, or a coach isn’t that we don’t know what to do. The real problem is that we don’t want to change our mind.
It’s a skill, an attribute of those who are successful and happy. If you need a pro to help you, that’s great, but be clear with yourself that the goal isn’t to find a better path; it’s to find the bravery to change your mind.
So, I’ve sort of just grasped onto the fact that you can change your mind about what you want to do, everyday. It doesn’t matter what you wanted to do yesterday, or what people thought you were yesterday. It sort of matters what you are today. So, if that’s different from yesterday, it’s ok to experiment with that. I mean you should be able to be five again, and just try out a bunch of different things, until one thing clicks and you’ll never not want to do it. – Sierra Goldstein
That’s your responsibility as a person, as a human being — to constantly be updating your positions on as many things as possible. And if you don’t contradict yourself on a regular basis, then you’re not thinking. – Malcolm Gladwell

those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything – GBS
You spend your life making decisions. Meanwhile, things change. Your values change. Your dreams change. What broke your heart or made your day at 4 is inconsequential at 40. What breaks your heart or makes your day at 40 was incomprehensible at 20. And there will come a day when you would give everything you have left to have what you have right now.
(on bad advice to student): you’ve spent x years learning y, you can’t just up and leave an d now do z.. i think this is flawed because it weighs too heavily the time behind you, which can’t be changed, and largely discounts the time in front of you, which is completely malleable..
choose to redefine whatever we’re doing as the thing we’ve chosen to do, right here and right now.
