I am going to talk about another slap that has hardly featured in any coverage of this case – a hard slap that was given to Ahed Tamimi by the ‘restrained’ soldier, just 5 seconds before her now-famous slap back to the soldier from Ahed.

Why has the reaction to Ahed been so different?

http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/west-praising-malala-ignoring-ahed-171227194606359.html

Ahed’s plight should prompt us to interrogate our selective humanitarianism. Individuals who are victims of state violence, whose activism unveils the viciousness of power, or whose rights advocacy centres communal care, deserve to be included in our vision of justice.

Girls like Ahed who critique settler colonialism and articulate visions of communal care are not the empowered femininity that the West wants to valourise. She seeks justice against oppression, rather than empowerment that benefits only herself.

Her feminism is political, rather than one centered on commodities and sex. Her girl power threatens to reveal the ugly face of settler-colonialism, and hence is marked as “dangerous”. Her courage and fearlessness vividly render all that is wrong with this occupation.

not to mention.. malala‘s mission is Ed .. via jason .. nobels as one’s who perpetuate the status quo..

Israel indicts Palestinian teen activist Ahed Tamimi

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2018/01/israel-indicts-palestinian-teen-activist-ahed-tamimi-180101183249057.html

The incident occurred moments after Israeli forces had shot Ahed’s 15-year-old cousin point-blank in the face with a rubber bullet. The wounded minor experienced severe internal bleeding and was placed under a medically-induced coma for 72 hours

While this is the first time Ahed has been detained by Israeli forces, Nariman has been arrested at least five times before

“They built the case around her specifically to try to keep her in prison as long as they can,” he said

“Her fate is now in the hands of people who don’t even see Palestinians as full human beings.”

Prisoners’ rights group Addameer has reported that stone-throwing is the most common charge levied against Palestinian children. In the occupied West Bank, where Palestinians are governed by Israeli military law, stone-throwing is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

The group says that Israel routinely targets “the youngest and most vulnerable” members of politically active Palestinian families in order to “exert pressure on their family and the entire community to put an end to all social mobilisation.”

Bassem told Al Jazeera that Israel is attempting to “break Ahed, because she is a symbol of the resistance”.

“Israel wants to show other young Palestinians what will happen to them if they try to resist.”

Israeli forces have shot dead a Palestinian teen on the northern outskirts of the occupied West Bank town of Ramallah, according to Palestinian officials.

Musab was a member of the Tamimi family who live in the adjacent village of Nabi Saleh, where a prominent teen activist was arrested on December 19.

“The occupation army has been raiding both Deir Nitham and Nabi Saleh day in and day out. They come in, irritate the residents, raid our homes at night and throw sound bombs in the street. This has been our reality every day,” said Firas (musab’s father).

We cannot just keep quite and keep watching. No one is listening to us – no one feels the pain that we’re going through. The world is just silently watching.”

In short, while the world is living in the fantasy world of negotiations and recognition, Ahed is living in the brutal reality of occupation – where the settlers of nearby Halamish have superior rights to her, even though they live illegally in the West Bank, and she is considered a “security threat” for daring to challenge this reality.

What Israel seems to be woefully oblivious of is that there are thousands of Aheds out there – who know that it is not normal to live besieged or behind walls or checkpoints; who know that apartheid will eventually fall

And for demanding her freedom, for speaking truth to power, the entire weight of the security establishment comes crashing down on a 16 year-old for doing one thing: Holding a mirror to Israel, and asking it if it likes what it sees.

Ahed Tamimi is not alone. There are hundreds of Ahed Tamimis and there have been thousands before her. According to the latest official figures, 331 Palestinian minors are currently held in Israeli prisons.

And since 2000, at least 8,000 Palestinian minors have been arrested and prosecuted in the Israeli military detention system, according to advocacy group Defence for Children International Palestine.

The most common conviction? Stone throwing.

The Israeli military was forced to give in and drop 8 of the charges against Ahed as part of a plea bargain, in which Ahed recognized in court the fact that she slapped the soldier and called for protests. In return, Ahed will get the minimum sentence of 8 months instead of spending at least 3 years in prisonbased on what the military prosecutor was initially seeking. Lawyers at Ofer Military Court told us we would be lucky if they offered a 2 year plea bargain. But now, Ahed will be out in July — early enough to go to her first year in college. For the next 4 months in prison, Ahed will focus on her studies and take her final year exams. Ahed’s mother, Nariman, will also be released at the same time

Detained children, who are often beaten, disoriented, and afraid, end up saying anything the interrogator wants them to — but Ahed courageously maintained her right to remain silent throughout the entire interrogation.

“There is no justice under occupation,” said the 17-year-old cuffed in the docket on March 21, looking at her family and friends at the back of the gallery. “We are in an illegitimate court,” she continued in Arabic, speaking in a calm, explanatory tone until her guards shut down the impromptu statement.

She has learned, over years in a local protest movement, against overwhelming army domination, that publicly speaking out is her best defense.

I think more than 300 times they raided inside my house… They took my electronic devices several times. They broke the windows several times. They shot most of my children several times. My son was arrested two times. My wife was arrested five times.  I was arrested nine times. I was tortured and be paralyzed for a period of time. My wife was shot in her leg, two years she couldn’t walk. My home is under a demolition order.

After all of that somebody asked, why Ahed slapped a soldier? She must slap the soldier.

Sometimes I feel there is a triple standard or more than in dealing with the Palestinian issue.
